My final PhD thesis chapter was published last week! Very happy to share this-- we used metaproteomics, metatranscriptomics, and many measurements of dissolved metal chemistry to document Zn limitation of phyotplankton in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica.

Zinc stimulation of phytoplankton in a low-carbon-dioxide, coastal Antarctic environment: evidence for the Zn hypothesis Abstract. The ocean acts as a carbon sink, absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and resulting in substantial uptake of anthropogenic CO2ย emissions. As biological processes in the oceans such as netโ€ฆ

The turnout in small towns across the country has been incredible drawing crowds of thousands. Weโ€™re already seeing over one million in attendance nationwide, and events are still underway. Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Ohio all had especially surprising showings.

I have never seen anything like this in NYC. 5th Ave covered from 42nd St well to the 20s. Nobody prepared for this volume. Volunteers are holding the traffic on all the side streets. No police in sight. #handsoff

There are trans Americans right now looking out at this world and wondering if anyone is going to stand up for them and for their simple right to exist.

Well, I am. We are. We will.

Transgender Day of Visibility isnโ€™t just about being seen or heard. Itโ€™s about being recognized and respected. For trans people, visibility can be empowering and at the same time dangerous, almost an impossible choice between pride and safety. Uplift our voices and make the world safe for us too.

We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything Iโ€™ve seen in my life. Itโ€™s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country.

This Friday, where will you be?

A digitally drawn portrait of Nadja of Antipaxos. She is lit with blue light and is looking directly at the viewer with her mouth open slightly to show off her fangs. She has a few streaks of differently colored hair, but it is otherwise very dark blue-black and loose around her face.

Hello bluesky! I am so happy to share that some of my Antarctic work was published today in BG: bg.copernicus.org/articles/21/.... This paper is seven (!) years in the making! Zinc is an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton, and is uptaken rapidly (biogeochem modelers please take note!)
