Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US? It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.

Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."

Why do people do gig economy work? Are the few businesses they "start" worth valorizing, or are they also a sign of the precarity of labor markets?

08.10.2025 13:12 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Grouping "gig economy" work into "entrepreneurship" points to the conceptual weakness of both frameworks. Thanks to the authors for making this clear.

Fwiw, the convertabilty of the psychological wages of whiteness to, say, USD is inconsistent at best. It can buy you, though, first boarding on many domestic flights and 20% off your movie ticket at select theatres

A stacked bar graph showing the evolution of income for bottom 50% households over the course of the last economic expansion (2009-2019). It shows that these households saw their income growth by a bit less than 30%, compared to about 41% for top 10% households.

The stacked bars show what components of income made up this growth. About half was from wages, with most of the rest from increased transfer payments.

Municipal enterprises are a way for a community to make a democratic decision to redistribute monopoly rents typically accruing to some petty capitalist towards some collective end. And the democratic descision here? it should be easier to get consistent, cheap, good-enough food

27.09.2025 23:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm honestly in favor of municipal enterprises operating in many contexts, especially in markets with inevitable market power (example: city of Brookings, SD, successfully runs a liquor store, with a legal monopoly).

imo Mamdani shouldn't just campaign for municipal grocery stores, he should add "they also have affordable cafeterias"

Fwiw, decisions like this (and other nativist labor mkt policies) both undercut real wages but also big pushes to increase capital intensity in formerly labor intensive sectors. Who stands to benefit from the second? Mostly big tech
