256M of memory in 2001: you can play Civilization 3, an incredibly fun and addictive game simulating the entire world.

256M of memory in 2026: you can show one github page. Don't ask about jira, you can't afford it.

Opinion | Ring is using lost dogs to make the surveillance state adorable The same technology the Amazon-owned company uses to find lost dogs could easily be turned against their owners.

β€œNo matter how Ring and other surveillance tech companies may downplay it, there’s no world in which finding lost dogs is the final end-use for this technology.”

suggestion for terminology: by analogy with 'daemon' and wordplay with the initialism LLM, using the term 'lilim' for large language models

bonus: gets us away from using the term 'ai', accurately describes them as inhuman entities that can be dangerous if improperly handled

Yeah it's important to remember that we are absolutely capable of big environmental wins, we just have to stop whinging about it. Growing up there was no such thing as "hawks" even in the burbs.

Donald Trump is:

- Openly racist
- Covering up evidence he may have sexually abused children
- Directly responsible for the murder of US citizens by masked agents of the state
- Openly looting the treasury and taking bribes from foreign leaders
- Polling at 38% amongst the American people

A cartoon made in response to an Elon Musk tweet that reads β€œWhoever said β€œmoney can’t buy happiness” really knew what they were talking about πŸ˜”β€

The black and white cartoon shows Musk standing against the wind. There is a distant expression on his face and a single tear being blown from his left eye.
He wraps his arms around himself, trying to keep warm. The world is so cruel to him. Punishing him for the meagre crime of hoarding massive amounts of wealth and showing no empathy for the vulnerable. Also, he uses his platform to boost racism, misogyny, and white supremacy but seriously guys who would hold that against a fella?

Next to him a caption reads β€œBeing a shit person is ruining my life”

Ending billionaireism isn't just socially and economically necessary to maintain human civilization, it's a humanitarian measure for the billionaires themselves. They're clearly very sick and we can help them

AI is just Tesla as an entire market sector. Promises that massively outstrip reality. "Next year" every year. Wildly inflated value. And a product that does something interesting, but if you don't keep both eyes on it will drive you straight into a parked semi truck.

Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesiveβ€”because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about β€œWestern civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significantβ€”though not finalβ€”victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. Marcus C Sarofim | Substack Climate science and policy analysis from Marcus Sarofim: 17 years EPA, MIT PhD, JHU adjunct, key contributor to 2009 GHG Endangerment Finding. Saraph (my name's root) means "fire"β€”fitting for climate ...

After 17 years, I left the EPA yesterday. I'm sad to leave my "unicorn job", but this admin won't let me work on climate change.

I'll be posting at thesaraphreport.substack.com

First up: the Endangerment Finding. I helped write it. I defended it. Now I'm watching them tear it down.

That is definitely worse than no sword at all because it will sit there saying "I'm a sword, swing me around" and the handling experience will be so bad you will cry. Possibly the sword will come apart and launch the blade through the air into your cat, and the you will cry more.

You really don't have to assess their posts any more, you can just assume everything is a lie. The only thing you miss out on is figuring out exactly what kind of lie it is which is an ok hobby activity if you like doing it but not necessary.

This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.
