Also, most folks simply aren't trained to do research and--in my experience--tend to confuse it for reading an article or two.

Why is "Do your own research" terrible advice? Because of confirmation bias and motivated reasoning.

People with a distrust of experts and consensus in a given field, a field in which they themselves are not experts, will seek and find something to support what they already believe.
