Ashes of Time (1994) has a preceding reputation, a troubled production skirting a nightmare that testifies to Wong Kar-wai’s narcissistic failings. The brightest of Hong Kong’s golden 90s stars at the mercy of a dickhead egotist.

It’s REALLY fucking good, I’m sorry 😂

Just about the most beautiful cast you could ask for, a who’s who of the best to ever do it all moving through an atemporal language of editing like ghosts trying to out-haunt each other. With the metaphysical synths of Frankie Chan and Roel A. García’s eerie and tearful score, it’s all SO oblique.

The aged print of the theatrical version has clearly dulled Christopher Doyle’s photography, but the synesthetic impressionism still brings such an edge to martial battle choreography, and the liminal endlessness of the desert really needs to be seen (and felt) to be believed.

Really impossible to nail a single character or actor that steals it, but Brigitte Lin is especially amazing (as always), her dissociative duality and fliting between physicalities like seeing an evil angel at work.

Wuxia as mists, winds, smoke. Pretty unmatched unearthliness?
