I think they’re actually confusing reputation and reality. I know you know this but for the discourse, America’s brand was good globally before bush invaded Iraq and before Trump trumped. And even those of us who despair at the nations sins were advantaged by that fact. And that advantage is gone.

They’re obsessives whose impact is the result of hacking the levers and dials of society not genuine popularity and they don’t understand the difference.

New guy is there to act calm in front of the cameras. Understands his mission intellectually. Struggling to keep his emotions under control.

He doesn’t like people burning stuff. Burning stuff != more left. Destructive and bad politics. He questions the motives of those who like burning stuff. It’s possible for some people in every coalition to be assholes. You don’t get a pass just because you’re on the correct side.

This describes a political party (or maybe more so a union?) but we’ve seemingly lost the reflex for this kind of organizing and the network has ossified/shrunk but it’s recreation (creation?) would help on so may dimensions. I am sure there are challenges.

Apologies for interjecting. We should pursue the infrastructure to support the kind of coordination that, as you say, we currently lack. A party with more coherent and broad relations from the top down to the grass roots would be better positioned to execute your strategy. More trust at the roots.

This one triggered realization for me. In addition to being awful and stupid, a thing unifying this vile crowd of elites besides the Epstein files is this: immaturity.

He is a weird mean dude

It feels like the big challenge in any society (national, local, underground, revolutionary) is how to handle the people who want power too much.

Especially when this guy has the vibe of a drunk from a wealthy family who blew all his money on a bender working up to asking his dad for another disbursement.

Something very irritating about how as you say not even success but some validation (investment, access) unlocks a sense of license to bloviate, to riff, to adopt the posture of some kind of visionary and leave behind the drudgery of building a plausible argument and stack up evidence.

It is a totally meaningful comparison and anyone who cares about the holocaust should know that it is being echoed here and whats happening here needs to be stopped to prevent the comparison from becoming even more apt.

This article is bad. It quotes a series of institutions that sympathize with Trump. USA Today should’ve done some reporting to see if the comparison is true. People, including children, are being abducted and sent to camps and then, when deported, to camps with even more horrific conditions.

And now here we are with state thugs shooting people in the street for the crime of observing them and yelling at them.

Kind of wild how strongly those elite centrists reacted to cultural sensibilities around race and gender. There were some deserved firings and there was some social media pressure and the internal moral horror at the US’s record on these matters but no real compulsion, just values evolving.

And it’s not like any of this is obvious or deterministic. It’s all a tight rope gamble depending on a small amount of leverage and the sentiments of a cluster of republican politicians.

Even if the conditions on the ground were amenable they just don’t have this rhetorical move in their bag

Also how when they observe something they just develop a low rigor hunch about the cause and instantly upgrade the status of their hunch to a fact.

No sense at all of the possibility of learning something.
