LAUSD is sitting on millions in state funding for greening schools. Why are projects stalled for years? LAUSD's commitment to greening at least 30% of all its schools by 2035 has become a battle over power and resources.

Hillcrest Drive Elementary in the heart of L.A.’s Crenshaw District was awarded a nearly $1 million Prop 84 grant to green its schoolyard in 2012 as one of the top-ranked projects by the California Natural Resources Agency. After the original nonprofit could no longer shoulder the cost of working with LAUSD, the L.A. County Department of Public Works took over the Hillcrest greening project in 2015. Ten years later, a spokesperson for the agency told AfroLA that the project is set to break ground in 2026, 14 years after the grant was awarded. Records obtained by AfroLA show that the project has repeatedly missed deadlines for completion.

Still can't get over how LA County Public Works took over an LAUSD schoolyard greening project bc the nonprofit that received the grant money couldn't hack it — then took over 10 YEARS to actually implement the project.

It could take longer — the project is supposed to break ground next year.

LA has stopped repaving our streets The reason why is probably illegal

LA quietly stopped repaving all streets last July to avoid fulfilling its ADA obligations. The federal govt says when you repave a street, you have to update all the curb ramps. LA has tons of out of date curb ramps, so the rule makes repaving much more expensive. The city's solution: stop repaving!
