So Kruschev wakes in the middle of the night in a cold sweat
His wife asks him what wrong: “it was a dream, I was walking through red square with banners saying ‘long live the socialist revolution’”
Wife: “so what was wrong???”
Kruschev: “they were written in Chinese”

Don’t sweat bud, I don’t think this is what Ari was doing. I think it’s just fun fact time

I’m just not about dictatorship and I got annoyed someone thought NK was the fault of the US. But when you compare them to their nearest analog (prob Cuba) differences are obvious and someone is just catting water for a silly little self-proclaimed god king on then Pacific

Y’see, I go with that. I’m open to an economic system. I just want a healthy political system when push comes to shove. And that means representation. My forcing keeping a door open here is just about economic system. You pitch me something non-representative and you’ve lost me immediately

At least when they got bounced from New York they didn’t claim to be an indigenous tribe. Fucking Boers.

Look, I know you. I expect I could argue the imperfections of American democracy with you until days end but we’d be on the same side generally and I’d be giving you a free history lesson

Here’s my stance. I think authoritarians are authoritarians. I’m open to economics as a separate question from political system.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in on democracy. But I also don’t think Mao and Mussolini are fundamentally different. And neither is Trump.

But if you stack up the comparatively small sample size of “communist” (authoritarian) regimes against the the number of “democracies” in the world, I’m depressingly realizing the long arc of history bends towards Stalin, Trump, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mussolini, Netanyahu, Kim Jong-Un, MBS

I guess I still understand communism to be an economic system and not a political one?

Im open to the argument it hasn’t been properly applied.

In the small sample size we’ve observed, we’ve only seen sparkling authoritarianism and corruption.

I’m anti-authoritarian. I’m open to the idea that communism might have something to offer. I’m just tired of certain anti-communist tropes.

I want a good argument for communism that isn’t just “North Korea is OK”

I’m confused by this entire framing. Neither the US nor Russia have ever been defined as third world. They’re literally the definitions of first and second world.
Second, US industrial capacity outstripped most European countries well before there was a USSR.

I don’t think you need me to be a communist to agree with you on almost everything 🙃. Not saying I’m digging a trench, just that I don’t think you were selling communism, just global fraternalism. And I already had that!

The Tower of Babel is a very weird way to suggest this will work 😂. I’m inclined to agree it’s a boon for many things. But I do not think it’s going to teach Russians or far right Americans that migration is fine. I think it’s more likely to sycophantically feed their priors.

Okay I know Truman dropped an atomic bomb, and that is actually bad, but how familiar are you with Truman’s Title IV and the Helmand Dam project?
One of the opening shots of who Cold War was Truman and Stalin just sending engineers to Afghanistan going “I CAN HELP DEVELOP BETTER”

I don’t think the workers of Lagos and Quito and Tonga and Bordeaux and Boise are ever in alignment in a way that doesn’t also bring them into direct conflict.

But 1) industrialization will always be concentrated in particular areas
2) I don’t know much about him but from what I glean from his philosophy he was being extremely European-focused. I don’t think anything happens that erases official borders.

One thing I’m gonna call out here as I read through: I don’t think a global communist revolution will ever happen.
I do understand Marx intended for it to sprint from an industrialized west and would likely curse the fact it came from agrarian Russia and China.

Of course my submission is that at *least* the last three bleed together. They’re still fighting Medicaid, and I’m not sure they’re not trying to match us back to 1840.

I’m curious to hear your Bidenomics point. My perspective is that the Biden era brought some game-changing things, but some of the more significant ones were struck down by SCOTUS.

Ah, I was more being grumpy about someone suggesting NK is only in its position because of western sanction against communism, when it borders its two massive benefactors and while Cuba also exists within US strangle distance with less support.

Sometimes things are authoritarianism problems.
