INTERVIEW with Jason Hickel: "Degrowth is a gateway into socialist thought for the 21st century" Jason Hickel on the last five years of debating degrowth.

Degrowth challenges neoliberal capitalism, perhaps that is why there is so much pushback!

The economics of care …… modern monetary theory and global universal basic income

But of course all that relates to GDP which is an appalling measure as a fair measure of the nations wealth should include out natural capital. Which as one of the most nature depleted nations in the world the UK comes out abysmally.

See "On Natural Capital - Partha Dasgupta"

It rather sounded like Rory was defending planetary destruction through economics and wealth extraction by the rich owning politics.

Alastair was unreasonable. Until you know where you want to get to you can't produce legislation.

Rory is totally unreasonable and the one who needs to go and look at modern economic theory over the planet destroying established capitalism.

If Rory thinks progressive economics is about being endorsed by β€œeconomics academics” he’s totally missing the point

At today’s National Emergency Briefing, Chris Packham delivered a clear message: act now. Decision-makers must step up and tackle the climate crisis before it’s too late. Add your signature to the open letter to Keir Starmer.

Here’s the good news: over 80 countries from around the world back the roadmap. And the COP30 President is under pressure from Brazil’s President Lula – he wants the roadmap in the text. With all this, if thousands of us flood their social media channels right now, the COP30 President will feel it.

Without these, the agreement won’t deliver justice or protect places like the Philippines and Jamaica, which have just survived deadly storms.

The latest draft I read this morning simply doesn’t go far enough. To truly protect people and the planet, we need: a clear plan to phase out fossil fuels, more finance from rich nations, and stronger support for communities facing superstorms, floods, droughts, and heatwaves.

Brazil’s COP30 President, CorrΓͺa Do Lago, holds the pen in these negotiations. He has the power to get governments to back this vital roadmap in the final agreement. But he needs to show courage, not give in to polluters blocking it.

Scientists announce that 7 of 9 key 'planetary boundaries' have been crossed A team of global scientists issued a new report on Wednesday, noting that seven out of nine of key "planetary boundaries" have been crossed. Carbon dioxide emissions have increased ocean acidification...

New research shows that ocean acidification has now crossed the planetary boundary. That's 7 of 9 boundaries crossed. Capitalism is driving ecological catastrophe and will continue to do so until we align production to a new law of value.

The choice is stark: either we pretend the state must balance its books, or we face up to the truth that it has far greater responsibilities and capacities than our economic and political establishment acknowledges and start using them for the common good. www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/08...

This area in the middle demands honesty and kindness from politicians, media and business. Telling the truth obviously links well with the Climate Majority Project. And he gives a shout out to many of the organisations and thinkers we are already following. Action points at the end are good also.

Just finished reading β€œA Climate of Truth” by Mike Berners-Lee. A completely brilliant book as expected. It adds much clarity to the area of the moment between the polycrisis (many good books outline this well) and the modern techno-solutions (plenty to good books in this field also).

Countries reach historic deal to cut shipping emissions at IMO High drama at the International Maritime Org, as a set of policies to drive the shipping sector to net-zero goes to a vote. Pacific island nations, who have been pushing for more ambition all week, chose to abstain. US walked out!

"The system" is a thing we create to organise ourselves. We should rule it, not the other way round. Systems can be changed, because they are human inventions. All of us can make our corner of "the system" better, more empathetic, greener. Progress comes by valuing the humans above the system.

This may be a little out of date but shows how the MEDIAN wealth in each decile builds up to the GB total (more likely UK total) of Β£11 trillion or slightly more but definitely enough if redistributed to wipe out all public and private debt! Leaving about Β£6 trillion for UBI, UBS, renewable energy
