Try counting them, then trying to get that many people to wave "thanks" to you before you get where you're going. It's win-win. They feel better, you will feel better. Try it.

Chemical engineer, (former) paraglider pilot, dad who feels inadequate next to Bandit Heeler, happy the Whoniverse hasn't gone the way of the MCU.

07.08.2025 20:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In fact, with Culture-level tech something like a GSV is actually preferable to a planet.
07.08.2025 20:16 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I suppose. It kind of *is* technologically possible to launch one. What's not is to make it actually reach anywhere habitable, or remain habitable for any reasonable length of time.
On reflection, I'm coming to the idea that it's not actually repugnant assuming Culture-level tech.
Large tracts of Marillion's "Clutching at Straws", they're talking about you.

At last.
Don't get me wrong - I'd love to live on a GSV. The only fly in the ointment is that they're fictional. Real physics puts them out of reach forever.

07.08.2025 20:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The Sahara is a seven-star spa resort compared to the unrelenting, literally endless vacuum of deep space. It's not an "adverse situation" it's worse than any prison, no hope of parole, release or escape.
Tell me you know nothing about engineering/entropy without saying etc.
You wouldn't mind your grandparents deciding you deserve to be born, grow up and die in a tin can trillions of miles from anything? Not sure you're qualified to comment on morality.
07.08.2025 18:15 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0JC has the Folklands podcast, but the way media works for everyone else seems to be "get known, get a show, be on everyone else's show, be on panel shows, maybe get another show, then a travel show or something, then Big Fat Quiz."
Jinsy chaps just did "get a show". HOW??? / Why?
And the MUSIC. There's so much great music in every show, including one which is almost exclusively just one absolute banger after another. And the characters are incredible. I just don't understand how it's possible to get something like that made with no record, then just stop. Where are they?
07.08.2025 17:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0They do this despite never appearing on panel shows, not doing stand up, not appearing in anyone else's shows, and when it's done they just... evaporate.
It's like if John Cleese came out of nowhere (no At Last the 1948 Show, no Python), made Fawlty Towers, then vanished. It's absolutely baffling.
They then proceed to produce two series of what is a science fiction dystopia musical comedy sketch show, and the CAST - they get everyone, including the original Ford Prefect as a regular, David Tennant when he's just come off being the biggest thing on television, and the list goes on and on...
07.08.2025 17:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I quite seriously believe it's one of the best shows the UK has ever produced. It's incredible. What's even more incredible is that these two guys were not HatTrick/Avalon mafia, weren't ex-Footlights Edinburgh Festival regulars, they had practically zero footprint in comedy culture...
07.08.2025 17:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You have no idea... I'm also a fan of the Rule of Three podcast. I wanted an episode about This Is Jinsy. It was never gonna happen, because who's going to pick that? So I wrote, recorded and edited my own. Nerdiest thing I've ever done.

How would you feel if I held up your commute pushing my kayak to the river down the middle of the road on a hand trolley? Would you think me a selfish entitled git? If you can't afford a roof rack /trailer, don't buy a kayak. If you can't afford a horsebox, you can't afford a horse.

06.08.2025 11:02 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This! The worst thing about the very wonderful movie Iron Man 1 is that a whole cohort of arseholes looked at Tony Stark BEFORE he character-developed into a functional adult and thought "I want to be like THAT". And wrongly thought they had RDJ charisma to pull it off.
