October Horror, Day 31: Scream and Scream Again (1970, dir. Gordon Hessler). When I was in first grade, I got mono, and missed a ton of school. It was a rough time, and at one point I was stationed in the living room, delirious with fever (the headlights from passing cars would glide along the walls and looked like phantoms to me in the moment). I'm not sure if my mom put the tv on, or I did. But at some point in the midst of my delirium, I'm now certain that this movie was playing on it. In my head the tv was set to Nickelodeon, and this was somehow playing on Nick At Night, but it could have just as easily been the Million Dollar Movie or something. Anyway, all I remembered from it was Vincent Price and someone being put in a vat of yellow acid, and it terrified me.
So now, present day, I figured I should give it a proper watch. And it's honestly something of a fever dream, itself. A mix of Cold War political thriller, dystopian sci-fi, and swinging 60s vampire horror. It's totally ridiculous but extremely watchable. There's even a scene where a band (apparently Amen Corner, though I thought the singer could have been Steve Winwood for a moment) sings the titular psych pop theme song.

October Horror, Day 30: The Hand (1981, dir. Oliver Stone). Based on its less than stellar reputation (and my childhood interpretation of the VHS box for it), l'd always assumed this was a schlocky, silly movie about a killer, dismembered hand. But I was pleasantly surprised to find it's much more than that. While Stone is consciously working with the tropes of Corman or Castle style B movie (sometimes visually in ways the call to mind his later work with Natural Born Killers), his simultaneously subverting those elements in ways more along the lines of de Palma (I'm also maybe seeing some awareness of Cronenberg, and even more likely Kubrick's The Shining). Caine seems totally in sync here, meeting the story wherever it goes. This is campy and over-the-top, but that's exactly the intent.

31.10.2025 00:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I know, politically, Dems have been doing this since Clinton. But I feel like they didnβt start doing it rhetorically until the early 2000s.
Every time I see or hear one of them do it, it drives me insane. Itβs like The Mandela effect. βRonald Reagan?! You mean the soulless ghoul?!β

30.10.2025 15:51 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0October Horror, Day 29: Werewolves (2024, dir. Steven C. Miller). This movie is so dumb. BUT, it moves briskly and they linger on three werewolves just long enough in any given shot. The movie doesn't really wink except for the very beginning, where it also hand waves its "science", and I appreciate that. I'm not a Frank Grillo fan, and the emotional center of this movie is so transparently calculated but, again, it doesn't matter. This is schlocky but fast-paced creature action, and that is a corner of film in need of life. I'm not a fan of all the sharknado/scyfy cheese, and Werewolves avoids that as far as l'm concerned.
