Centrists who react to Nazis gaining ground with "we should try to reach out to them more" and react to socialists gaining ground with incandescent rage and tutting about populism are letting you know that their "centre" exists somewhere off beside Augusto Pinochet

The failure of the β€œblue no matter who” crowd to rally behind Mamdani really just lays the reality of that position bare, doesn’t it?

I think Sudan might shoot up the news agenda somewhat if two US Presidents and two British PMs e.g. announced we were sending the RSF more machine guns and missiles to kill more civilians, then told the press everyone protesting against it was a traitor extremist and sent the cops to arrest them.

This isn’t how it works. What happens is, Britain’s horrific media outlets stoke years of escalating, terrifying panics intended to spread fear and hatred, make their indulgence of politicians conditional upon their willingness to play along, then threaten Consequences if they don’t get their way.

The lads didn’t spend all that time e.g. angrily ignoring the Iraq inquiry report and stomping all over Tony’s enemies, just to *not* plaster him all over their papers once every two weeks, wittering whatever bollocks he’s been told by the latest squillionaires who gave him money.

Was it immigrants who pushed subprime lending onto the desperate and then sold that debt so extensively that every institution was exposed to it?

Was it immigrants who responded with ideological austerity targeted at the most vulnerable when it inevitably imploded?

The clear thread running through Goodwin's career is the drive to imbue his creepy fixation on immigration with the legitimising authority of supposed mass support. Here, audience members have disqualified themselves from the category of "the people" in his eyes by virtue of disagreeing with him.

Who told the public that he embodied the system? Who was it that said they were the real conservatives, and who said this was *precisely* what Britain needed, very enthusiastically cheering all of that on every step of the way?

That’s a fantastic comparison, because the reason they added lead to gasoline was just to increase convenience a tiny bit, and they’ve poisoned the world in the process.

The good news is: Impossible as it may seem, we banned it worldwide and its bad effects are now mostly gone.

Makes you think.

Buxton: Why one small town with very little immigration turned to Reform UK How national concerns affected a local election in the heart of the Peak District.

The whiter the area the more likely it is to have a Reform problem. Immigration isn’t the problem, otherwise you’d get Reform in more diverse areas - it’s fear of change among older people.

No shame, no opprobrium: racism is priced in now. Of all the right’s victories, this one has been critical | Jason Okundaye In this age of Tory nativism and Faragist populism, the question isn’t β€˜is this person a bigot’? Now it is β€˜does that matter at all?’ says Guardian writer Jason Okundaye

Probably not a coincidence that all the smartest, most Sensible people spent the last ten years screaming abuse at the country’s most high-profile antiracists and doing everything they could to hound them out of public life entirely.

The key thing here where she observes that there was unity and purpose in hounding out the left but now that’s done, there’s just… nothing there. And that’s true, there are few ideas, there’s no project and no purpose beyond sustaining themselves in office while snagging a sweet post-politics gig.

I do have a genuine theory that part of the problem is he's trying to run the country like a CLP and the problem is that if you crush the left they do not, in fact, quit the country and cease to be a factor

β€œVoters have gone off them since 2010” being the most in-depth explanation we’ll get. Was there a particular program implemented around 2010 that’s proven to be disastrous? Maybe there was, but what if all the important people had said it was great and screamed abuse at people who said it wasn’t
