While your anecdote about your neighborhood (which neighborhood, btw?) doesn't pass the sniff test, younger people do struggle to buy houses. They typically rent. Half the city is renters. Do they not matter to you either?
08.08.2025 19:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Your failure to grasp the complexities of city government and what is happening across the city on any given day does not mean council is not working on larger issues. They are. Many councilors express their vision, particularly Councilor Kanal. You're not listening.

The bit about PAC/BAC: those bodies have never been given actual power to truly influence or oversee projects, they are rubber stamp committees unfortunately. Reform there is also necessary.
Itβs ok to focus on more than one issue at a time, Iβm grateful that my D2 rep has eyes on these problems across the city.

I never want to leave, I love it. However, here's what I will say that I wish I'd known beforehand: The communications style of the PNW is very passive agressive. I'm from Los Angeles, we are expected to come off extremely extroverted and forward in that city, and the LA smile, loud greeting, handshake situation is not it up here. People were literally afraid of me. Because of the differences in communication styles, I literally missed it when people were being racist at me for the first full year at least. White people in Portland love to hire us, they love to take pictures of us for their socials and check the box that they have such and such percent of BIPOC on staff but as soon as we show we're real professionals with experience and opinions, frequently more than them since we came from larger markets, they get big mad and say they "feel threatened" and cry and get very overtly racist. Google pet to threat process and you'll see the step by step. Even though technically we're a sanctuary city, ICE operates with impunity here and the Portland police protect them and their building. So far, they have returned the citizens they detain, but if this gets worse, I'm worried there will be no backbone to our claims of sanctuary. And we know ICE doesn't care if someone is actually from here or not. This is where all the queer cousins move to get away from Catholic/Mormon/Evangelical hate back home. So if you're gay or trans, it's very nice to have community. As a very obvious queer person myself, it's been lovely to be in a room of other Latinos and not have to try and hide who I am out of fear. Overall, I do love it here. I got a lot of hate for being nonbinary back home, now I get the same amount of hate for being a Mexican, so my overall circumstances haven't changed. Plus the nature, the air, the food (eβ¦
