12.01.2026 19:07 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yeah I mean this is part of it right - people often say that it's because retail premises are too expensive etc but that's also the market
12.01.2026 14:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Genuinely these people have absolutely no idea how the economic system they live in and probably support is supposed to work. So much "*they* took our high street shops away!" Who did? Who took them? The invisible hand of the market, that's who.
12.01.2026 14:28 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There is extremely fertile ground for communism in the local town Facebook groups of Britain. The people in these groups all seem to want a planned economy, and seem to hanker for a grand authority which dictates which shops open in any given town, irrespective of business case.

03.01.2026 09:38 β π 21 π 4 π¬ 0 π 0Inquiry into failure to spot dissidentβs offensive tweets Aubrey Allegretti - Chief Political Correspondent Alaa Abd el-Fattah celebrates with his family in Cairo after he was freed from jail An internal inquiry has been launched by the Foreign Office into the βunacceptable failureβ of officials to spot βabhorrentβ social media posts from Alaa Abd el-Fattah. Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, admitted βdeep distressβ had been caused to Jewish groups by government statements welcoming the political activistβs arrival in the UK. These included a Boxing Day tweet from Sir Keir Starmer saying he was βdelightedβ el-Fattah had been allowed to travel to Britain, which set off a backlash after a history of social media posts calling for Zionist civilians to be killed emerged. Downing Street stressed on Monday that Starmer had been unaware of the comments, including calls for Downing Street to be burnt down, made between 2010 and 2012. Cooper said that present Labour and former Tory ministers βwere never briefed on these tweetsβ and civil servants in charge of the case βwere also unawareβ. βI take this extremely seriously both to ensure we have accurate information and because of the deep distress this has understandably caused,β she wrote in a letter to the foreign affairs committee on Monday night. βIt is clear that this has been an unacceptable failure and that long standing procedures and due diligence arrangements have been completely inadequate for this situation.β The unexpected emergence of el-Fattahβs tweets risked contributing to the distress felt by Jewish people given βrising antisemitism, and recent horrific attacksβ, Cooper added.
One week they're crying about people getting visits from the police because of tweets, the next week they're calling for inquiries into tweets.
30.12.2025 08:44 β π 480 π 131 π¬ 12 π 13realise how bad our legal position and the behaviour of this govt really is. I don't even think it's a reaction to Reform because they're not really any different on trans folk - in fact their prisons spokesperson said they would put some trans women in women's prisons!
27.12.2025 10:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah you're not wrong - basically their direction of travel is faster and more dangerous, and the federal govts intent is very clear. Some states are standing up for trans people and that's the only saving grace. I would rather be here than there at the moment, but I do think it's important people..

26.12.2025 22:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A lot of complexity and obvs some US states are much worse than UK, some are better. 26.12.2025 22:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yeah the UK has more transphobic laws at a national level than the US does in almost every way.
26.12.2025 21:44 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If you drive professionally then you should be held to a higher standard, not lower! Even if you don't drive professionally, if you do something egregious like this that should be it! It's not like driving is some core human rights that cannot be taken away
16.12.2025 14:02 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0If you're a vet & you mistreat an animal in your private life, you'll be treated MORE harshly than if you're a regular person. Yet if you need to drive for your job and get caught speeding in your private car, you seem to be able to argue a ban will disproportionately affect your job. That is worse!
16.12.2025 14:02 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We have such a ridiculous attitude towards driving. Having a licence is not a right, and it should be denied if you can't be trusted to do it. One thing that always annoys me is that driving is the only discipline where you're treated more leniently if you need to do it for your job.

15.12.2025 14:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah like round where I live you see people in actually dirty mitsubishi shoguns or whatever and you know they're actually using it. I still do not need to see these 2.5 ton RWD SUVs anything like as much as I do though!
13.12.2025 21:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One other thing, I'm just going to say it - there's a certain category of extremely online city dweller who seem to genuinely think not having a car is completely achievable for almost everyone and they're living on a complete other planet to most of us, unfortunately.
13.12.2025 20:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I think we should be taking significant measures to completely discourage driving in cities where there's decent public transport alternatives. Tax the shit out of people driving where there's a public transport alternative. The problem arises in non-urban areas where there's often no alternative
