Spotted! Nat Reeve, author of Nettleblack and Earlyfate, stopped by the library to check out his books on our Pride display! Reeve is visiting the university for the Neo-Victorian Crime Fiction conference to discuss his books, which have a cast of queer characters solving crimes in a Victorian town.

Last year, I was able to attend the CILIP Conference thanks to a bursary by @ukeig.bsky.social, in exchange for a write up about the event. I'm really excited to share my report about CILIP and again express my gratitude to UKeiG for enabling me to attend!

Work trusted me to coordinate our pride display this June. With all the bad news for the queer community out there at the moment, I chose to focus our display on Queer Joy and Visibility: We've always been here and we're going to be happy being out regardless of what you're trying to do to us 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

International Women's Day is coming up on Saturday 8th March 2025 with a theme this year of Accelerate Action to achieving gender equality. Throughout March we will be showcasing some of our resources related to women's achievements, including displays on Prize Winners within their fields #IWD2025

As February ends and I look back over my achievements, this display and being able to talk about it in my work blog: Exploring Library Resources is definitely a highlight.

In my undergrad dissertation I was comparing Sarah Farley's Bristol Journal with Felix Farley's Bristol journal and for word count purposes they became SF and FF throughout once I'd put the full title in the introduction...

This is a sewing pattern. It is also a page from a late 14th century manuscript that is one of two primary sources for an important Icelandic saga (Sturlunga saga), but that was probably not important to the 17th century person who really needed a sewing pattern.

I mean we had been doing that before, and that is what happened when I moved schools and was less enthusiastic by the Katie's in my new school (common name for girls my age), but the teacher didn't want to keep going Katie B no S if one of us was misbehaving but one not.

They did technically name me Katherine so it was sort of their fault, but they really didn't think it would come up until I was a teen/adult and they didn't make any fuss beyond asking me if I wanted to be Kathy at home (no, I like Katie, Kathy was just a means to an end).

My best friend when I was 6 was a Katy and the teacher refused to let me sit next to her because Katie/Katy was too confusing, so I decided to go by Kathy in school so I could sit next to this kid. My parents only found out at parents evening and had a confusing meeting until the name change came up
