i think the entrance of The West allows Kuang to explore Japanese justifications for imperialism (ie “we need to catch up with the Europeans” or “we must paternalistically guard asia against Europeans by becoming lile them”) as well as Kuomintang accommodationism of western colonialism better

i think it veers away from hewing to real events and veers towards precise depiction of ideologies of Kuomintang etc, if that makes sense
