I cannot imagine the degradation of content over there now. When I kicked off over a year ago it was already reading like an old Ebaum's World thread, with even more racism and misogyny.

24.07.2025 00:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Mark my words, Trump will rip the football away again very soon and Columbia will give more and Trump will move it again. Does nobody at Columbia understand game theory?
23.07.2025 23:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0When Trump trolls dem politicians, I think, wow that's immature for a president, but not a crisis. When the president trolls the Fed chairman, I think, wow that's bad for the long-run solvency of our economy.
21.07.2025 18:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is problematic because a president personally attacking a Fed chairman is a VERY BIG DEAL. Presidents have (though they should not) commented on Fed policy before, but leveling personal grievances publicly hasn't been seen since Nixon brutalized Burns in the early 70s. Then we had Stagflation.
21.07.2025 18:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0One of the things I was not prepared for was extent simply holding to account a president over decorum would be considered silly political correctness, so much that a so-called hostile press seems to largely turn a blind eye. POTUS called the Fed Bank Chairman "stupid." And it wasn't even a story.

19.07.2025 18:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm slowing realizing the only way people will ever accept replacing human customer service with AI is to get them so used to terrible service they will willfully accept the high propensity of error in AI service functions (e.g. insurance denials) because it will seem no worse.

For my entire adult life I've felt nothing but stupefying and unearned privilege despite being from a broken home absent any college degrees. What the hell is Andreessen whining about?!

08.07.2025 13:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0While many people seem to verbally acknowledge the difficulties of being a parent, my personal experience is that non-parents don't seem to have a clue the time it takes to have a kid and a lot of parents don't seem to extend much grace to other parents. It's more isolating than I expected.

The big picture
The overarching idea most consistently in my head while watching The Bear, other than how much I love it, is:
Is every aspect of your job-process, philosophy, personality, quality, quantity, delivery, and wage rate- meticulously scrutinized and criticized publicly?
Welcome to being a professor.
I'd certainly love to dissect and debate the merits of Mamdani's proposals, including which I disagree with. But as long as elected officials are floating denaturalization, what is the point of even trying? At this point, I want him to win mayor just to spite that level of insanity we're seeing.
26.06.2025 23:24 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It is pretty wild how all the dudes I went to HS with who didn't read more than one page of text the entire time get the exact same level of electoral influence on economic policy as me. 07.06.2025 21:54 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's pretty on brand. In my 8 years in NYC I had a landlord who slashed my bike tires, sent threatening texts, and eventually stood outside our window one night, belligerently drunk, and yelled at my wife about how he was going to kick us out. And we had a hole in our roof the entire time.
