Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025.

This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

The Words Federal Agencies Are Discouraged From Using Under Trump (Gift Article) Federal agencies have issued guidance to employees on hundreds of terms to limit or avoid using. An analysis of government websites shows many of the same words being removed.

This is like 1984. I gifted the article so you can read it.

Ignoring for a moment the authoritarian censorship β€” the party of β€œsmall government” wants to micromanage words but can’t even be bothered to alphabetize a list?

"That would include any books that mention slavery, the civil rights movement or the treatment of Native Americans... At one elementary school, that has amounted to hundreds of books in several stacks, filling rolling carts."

January 2025 was quite unexpectedly the warmest January on record at 1.75C above preindustrial, beating the prior record set in 2024.

This is despite the presence of La NiΓ±a conditions in the tropical Pacific, with the El NiΓ±o event of 2023/2024 long faded. www.theclimatebrink....

Oh that’s interesting! I’ll keep an eye on that.

I’m just annoyed that I’ll have to make a set of file copies just to post here. It adds an extra step to a process I was already ambivalent about. I always make reduced web versions of my work for my website, but not for daily social media stuff.

Thanks so much! I removed my comment as well. It’s a bummer to hear that content is getting ripped over here.

Meta’s decision to deemphasize hashtags was never about user experience. It was about control.

Hashtags are a user-generated, bottom-up means of organizing content. Algorithms are company-driven and top-down. With hashtags, we control what we see. With algorithms, they control what we see.
