Love my family history; social work quals and worked in prisons for years. Now gardening, enjoying my grandson, and researching, researching, researching. What could be better?

My GG grandmother was charged but not convicted of doing abortions - I found she was operating a scam for money - pretty callous. Have just found what happened to the girl she scammed (court case) so at last can complete the story! long live indepth research! #Genealogy

New on Ancestry (for World Explorer/World Heritage) – a transcribe feature for handwriting. Its not too bad – I tested it on a marriage cert with messy writing & given the difficulty of writing in columns, it got most right except for transcribing Williams as Bellairs (interesting!). #genealogy

I hadn't thought of that! but no, its definitely Orious. I met Lizzie only once when I was 5. She was in bed, & started talking about me having her pearls. All the women in the room ushered me out quick smart. but I did get her silver locket & greenstone pendant with her initials in gold on it!

Unfortunately not, Linda. I have a name of my own to add - ORIOUS. My great grandmother was Lizzie Orious Stokes. She was named after a cousin, Lizzie Orious Fielder. No idea where it came from, and its not a family surname. Lots of transcriptions called her onions, though...

Dear Helen, thanks so much for this. I was a social worker and counsellor in prisons for some 17 years. I find my work and academic background helps me to research the social context of my family history. Thanks!

Dear Emily, I do understand. I keep my research private, because I invest time and money in it, and unless a genuine researcher asks me for assistance, I rarely show publically my hard-won information. Sorry you have had so many difficulties!

Maybe you could get in touch with a postcard collectors society in Nova Scotia. Someone may have a postcard of it. There are postcards on ebay too.

So agree with you. Sometimes researching witnesses on marriage regs is the only way to get family connections. County archives no matter where you are are invaluable for letters, reciepts for work etc that give great insight into the lives of family

Go sideways with research. #genealogy Research the clergyman who baptised them and see what his political and religious beliefs were. Look up the social context. Do a timeline, and include what other family members were doing and where they were. Eureka!

I am very impressed with this site, and the back issues available in full. But must comment - lets continue with "an historian" - British common usage - not "a historian" which is awkward to say. #genealogy
