I feel a bit weird talking about books on here these days, but I just finished the second Lumatere, and this series is really weird. It’s enough of a soap opera that I’m off to read the third (I am too invested in the twin brothers who keep swapping places), but I do have an Expression on my face.

Yes! I never expected WaPo to turn out like this, it feels like such a betrayal. 😭 But I feel like even when you tell non-D.C. liberals what you’re seeing with your own eyes and hearing from your own neighbors, they don’t want to fully believe you because it’s just too scary. I’m so frustrated.

Yeah, the mixed feelings are real. I’ve been reflecting a lot about how the people in my everyday life are largely immune to the large or small-scale denial that the rest of the country seems to have about how serious the situation is. I think it’s going to be rough to leave that common awareness.

Great time to be about to leave D.C. for a year? Yeah, sure, but my contrariness almost makes me want to stay, just to be part of the collective action that’s rapidly being organized around me.

I’m leaving, I am, but I do intend to come back.

this dc situation looks pretty horrible. i wish i had more to say except that autocracy is always mundane and petty and vicious and encourages you to look away and be safe. and you can live quite normally under it until you're a direct target
