This is so sad but not shocking.

Mom of two boys; one autistic, one nonautistic, special ed teacher, and doctoral candidate studying how autistic recommendations impact school supports. Are we learning from the true autism experts (autistics)? And if not, how do we change that?
This is so sad but not shocking.

I am looking for any special educator in the United States who works with autistic students in grades five through twelve who may be interested in participating. This would involve an interview over Zoom that would take approximately 60 minutes.
27.12.2025 16:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Hello, my name is Julie Martin-Beaulieu, and I am a high school special education teacher and doctoral student. I am currently conducting a dissertation study on how recommendations from the autistic community are impacting the services we provide to autistic students in schools.
27.12.2025 16:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Are recommendations made by autistic people impacting school supports?
That's what my dissertation topic explores. If you are a special ed teacher in the US and might be interested in participating in my study please read my approved invite in the next posts.
Interviews are lasting about 30 minutes
From my perspective as both a parent and teacher it is definitely not lack of motivation or effort. I agree completely.
26.12.2025 21:39 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I do appreciate your insight. I wish I could make school fit them better. But instead I am sort of expected to figure out how they can fit school. I donโt want to do that in a way that causes distress. And ideally I find a way that maybe even lets them enjoy school? I struggle so much with this.
26.12.2025 20:51 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thanks. Iโve been trying to have them pick something that increases their comfort (like sitting on a good chairโฆlistening to music, gum or a snack etcโฆ) because that helps me get through things I donโt enjoy. But I am not autistic so my experience and likely my โsolutionโ are not necessarily helpful
26.12.2025 20:51 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Necessarily like. Not sure how to work around those types of requirements. Thank you so much for replying!
26.12.2025 19:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0So the issue is that I am not giving the assignments. I support them in a resource setting so I donโt have much control over how things are presented to them. I do chunk up assignments and help them take breaks when needed to recharge. But there are books they are required to read that they donโt
26.12.2025 19:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Any advice from autistic people is greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping people might be able to offer me some guidance on how to help my students focus on things they need to but are not interested in at all. I am not looking for reward systems or anything like that. They all want to do well, it is not a motivation issue, it's a genuine challenge for them.
26.12.2025 19:09 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Requesting some guidance from #actuallyautistic people. I teach HS and I have a few students who genuinely struggle with shifting and keeping their attention on things they are not interested in. This is beyond just "I'm bored".
26.12.2025 19:09 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0This is very disappointing...
26.12.2025 19:03 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Iโm not autistic but when my son was first diagnosed I would have told me to find autistic people to learn from. I feel like my son lost so much because I was learning from the nonautistics โexpertsโ in autism.

06.12.2025 16:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It sure is. And it seems like it is happening quickly.
06.12.2025 16:41 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0And people are quickly taught โsize of the problemโ. A structured and endorsed way to minimize someoneโs experiences.

Greetings All! I am in the study portion of my dissertation and am wondering if anyone out here would be interested in participating OR maybe you know someone who would be? I'm studying how much autistic recommendations have impacted services we provide to autistic students in schools.
06.12.2025 12:13 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Ugh. This whole idea of nonautistics credentialed professionals positioning them as autism experts is nauseating and dangerous.
05.12.2025 11:23 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0And this is another reason why nonautistics need to understand autistic masking and burnout. Otherwise we just perpetuate the conditions that lead to both
