Julie MB: an Autism Learner

@autismlearner.bsky.social

Mom of two boys; one autistic, one nonautistic, special ed teacher working primarily with autistic students, and doctoral candidate focusing on autistic authenticity. As a nonautistic, I actively seek knowledge about autism from the autistic community.

Iโ€™m trying to focus on ways they promote authenticity versus masking behaviors. Since my premise is that nonautistics need to listen to autistics I donโ€™t want to design interview questions without input from the autistic community

Any feedback is appreciated

Thank you!

1. How do you build relationships with autistic students?

2. How do you respond to a student who is not doing what you are asking them to do?

3. How do you respond to a student who engages in repetitive behaviors- pacing, rocking, tapping pencil

4. How do you support connections between students?

Iโ€™m looking for some feedback from autistic people. I am working on my dissertation which intends to explore how recommendations from autistic people are shaping school supports.

I am seeking feedback from autistics on questions I would ask of special education teachers. Here is what I have so far

Comfort & Focus: Flexible Seating for Neurodiverse Students, a project from Ms. Martin Help me give my students flexible, sensory-friendly seating, fostering a comfortable and supportive learning environment where they can focus, engage, and thrive. In my high school classroom, stude...

My classroom has a small comfy area that I am hoping to expand. I have created a Donors Choose project to support this. I figured I would post it here in case anyone would like to help. My students helped me decide what to include in the wish list ๐Ÿ˜Š

I wanted to create a space and facilitate experiences that promote authenticity. Not being autistic myself I made it clear that I would seek autistic recommendations to inform my program. She agreed and I have LOVED my job this year. I am now growing the program with my current studentsโ€™ help.

Last school year I asked my supervisor if I could design a program for autistic students who did not require intensive academic support. These are students whose challenges are often minimized and whose unique strengths are frequently unseen. Programs for this population are not common.

RFK Jr calls autism a tragedy. As an autistic journalist, I have thoughts ANALYSIS: Health Secretary wilfully misreads data that should be celebrated, not feared, writes Eric Garcia

RFKโ€™s statement on autism is disgusting and dangerous. I will be sharing responses from the autistic community about this. Autistic people are the experts in autism. They are who we should be listening to.

Iโ€™m horrified. Outraged. This is so devastating. So much progress being dismantled so quickly.

I hate that phrase. And the phrase โ€œbut you donโ€™t LOOK autistic..โ€

Agreed. Iโ€™m here to fight with and for my son and the broader disabled community.

Not to mention that it leads to a decrease in vaccination rates which leads to an increase in tragic diseases (ie measles in Texas)

No not at all. But there is a preponderance of evidence documenting the safety of vaccines. Focusing on vaccines as a potential cause of those concerns can take the focus off of what really is the problem.

It would be far more beneficial to autistic people if more studies focused on things like support services, autistic masking, and the double empathy problem. The scientific, research, and clinical community should focus on the priorities that the autistic community identify.

Iโ€™ll hold off on replying specifically to this after I take a look at what you share. But in general, the focus on a cause and a cure amplifies the medical tragedy narrative and doesnโ€™t actually help the impacted community - autistic people.

Regarding #2 that was actually at the core of the issue. Although it is only one example of why his study did not meet scientific standards. Which is why it is largely considered to be flawed. The politics piece is why itโ€™s considered fraudulent.

My son is not a tragedy.

My son is not diseased.

Autistic people do not need research to focus on out how to prevent more of them from existing.

Hope that clarifies things.

Vaccines and Autism Two studies have been cited by those claiming that the MMR vaccine causes autism. Both studies are critically flawed.

Here is something that has more info on this.

Can you link to some of those studies? Iโ€™m genuinely curious.

He did actually lose his license though. The methods of his study were found to be quite flawed and did not meet scientific standards. The article I linked earlier has that info. But are you referring to a more recent study?

Also, this particular study has been repeatedly debunked and refuted by scientists and pediatricians. He lost his medical license over this.
