Hello, my name is Julie Martin-Beaulieu, and I am a high school special education teacher and doctoral student. I am currently conducting a dissertation study on how recommendations from the autistic community are impacting the services we provide to autistic students in schools.

Are recommendations made by autistic people impacting school supports?

Interviews are lasting about 30 minutes

From my perspective as both a parent and teacher it is definitely not lack of motivation or effort. I agree completely.

I do appreciate your insight. I wish I could make school fit them better. But instead I am sort of expected to figure out how they can fit school. I don’t want to do that in a way that causes distress. And ideally I find a way that maybe even lets them enjoy school? I struggle so much with this.

Thanks. I’ve been trying to have them pick something that increases their comfort (like sitting on a good chair…listening to music, gum or a snack etc…) because that helps me get through things I don’t enjoy. But I am not autistic so my experience and likely my “solution” are not necessarily helpful

So the issue is that I am not giving the assignments. I support them in a resource setting so I don’t have much control over how things are presented to them. I do chunk up assignments and help them take breaks when needed to recharge. But there are books they are required to read that they don’t

Any advice from autistic people is greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping people might be able to offer me some guidance on how to help my students focus on things they need to but are not interested in at all. I am not looking for reward systems or anything like that. They all want to do well, it is not a motivation issue, it's a genuine challenge for them.

Requesting some guidance from #actuallyautistic people. I teach HS and I have a few students who genuinely struggle with shifting and keeping their attention on things they are not interested in. This is beyond just "I'm bored".

I’m not autistic but when my son was first diagnosed I would have told me to find autistic people to learn from. I feel like my son lost so much because I was learning from the nonautistics “experts” in autism.

And people are quickly taught “size of the problem”. A structured and endorsed way to minimize someone’s experiences.
