Women in war are often forgotten, or footnotes at best. But at this precarious time in history, we need to remember the women like Czesława, who put everything on the line to fight for freedom. RIP Czesława, and godspeed.

When I was a little girl, I thought Czesława was a badass (though probably not in those words, lol). As I got older, her service and experiences led me to develop an interest in WWII and the women who fought against fascism.

I always looked forward to seeing Czesława march in the annual Memorial Day parade, which just happened to pass in front of our house. Even though there were many woman who fought, Czesława was the only female veteran I knew - at least that openly talked about her service.

Czesława was technically my cousins' grandmother, but she and her husband lived right down the street from the house where I grew up, and she'd often pass by our house on her walks around the neighborhood. Though we weren't related by blood, she always treated us like family.

I learned this morning that one of my childhood heroes passed away a few days ago.

Czesława was born in January 1925 in southern Poland. As a teenager, she was a member of the Polish Resistance, and later a gunner in the Home Army. She spent her 20th birthday in a Nazi POW camp.
