02.10.2025 05:40 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0In sum: studying affective polarisation along the urbanโrural divide is key. It tells us whether differences between cities and the countryside amount to a full-fledged cleavage โ rooted in identity โ and deepens our understanding of how place itself fuels political conflict. 7/7
01.10.2025 06:58 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Crucially, these affective divides also map onto politics: Urbanites with stronger in-group bias tend to support GAL parties (Green/Alternative/Libertarian). Ruralites with stronger in-group bias lean toward TAN parties (Traditional/Authoritarian/Nationalist). 6/7
01.10.2025 06:58 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Residential mobility also matters: Urbanites who grew up in rural areas but later moved to cities are less polarised. Divided loyalties dampen affective divides โ helping explain why ruralites are consistently more polarised than urbanites. 5/7
01.10.2025 06:58 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Feelings of place-based identity and resentment fuel these divides. The more strongly people identify with their place โ and the more they feel it is being left behind โ the more they favour their in-group over the out-group. 4/7
01.10.2025 06:58 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Using original survey data from 9 European countries ๐จ๐ฟ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ซ๐ท๐ฉ๐ช๐ฌ๐ท๐ญ๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐ต๐ฑ๐ช๐ธ, we find clear evidence of affective polarisation along the urbanโrural divide. Rural residents show stronger in-group bias, but urbanites, too, often favour their own. 3/7
01.10.2025 06:58 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0We know cities and the countryside differ in voting behaviour and attitudes. But do urbanites and ruralites also dislike each other? We introduce the concept of place-based affective polarisation to capture these biases. 2/7

Together with @dschraff.bsky.social, I ask: Is the urbanโrural divide in Europe affectively polarised?

Had a fantastic time presenting co-authored work with @dianebolet.bsky.social and @tabouchadi.bsky.social on the political effects of the green transition in rural communities. Thank you very much for having me!

07.05.2025 09:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm not sure how helpful the debate between context and composition really is. After all, composition itself contributes to contextโshaping the social and cultural fabric of a place. Even if compositional effects are significant, place as a social identity can still be meaningful.
19.02.2025 09:50 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0TL;DR: Place is not just where we liveโit shapes how we think about politics and society. Understanding the urban-rural divide is key to grasping polarization in European politics today. ๐๏ธ๐๏ธ (6/6)
04.12.2024 09:28 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Lastly, in a third paper, I show that urbanites and ruralites view each other as opposing groups, tied to stereotypes around class, education, and political attitudes. These perceptions deepen the urban-rural divide and fuel political polarization. (5/6)

In a second paper, @dschraff.bsky.socialโฌ and I develop the concept of place-based affective polarization. Rural and urban groups strongly identify with their in-groups while disliking out-groups, driving voting behavior along the transnational cleavage. (4/6)

In a paper published in JEPP, I find that local institutions act as a safe haven for those experiencing place-based resentment. Rural residents distrust national institutions more but maintain trust in local governance, especially in countries with high local autonomy. (3/6)

Urban and rural residents increasingly view politicsโand each otherโthrough the lens of place. Rural voters often favor the radical right, while urban voters back the new left. This behavior is deeply rooted in place as a powerful marker of group membership. (2/6)
04.12.2024 09:28 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The urban-rural divide is back in European politics. My dissertation explores how place-based identities, resentments, and affective polarization shape this divideโand what it means for political attitudes and behavior. A short ๐งต on my main findings: (1/6)

18.12.2023 09:56 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0For policy-making, these findings reinforce the importance to continue devolving authority to local institutions. Giving local communities a greater say in their own affairs might be another viable option to counteract the โcrisis of trustโ in rural and peripheral places. (8/9)
18.12.2023 09:56 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Furthermore, concerns over representation appear to be the most important factor. The stronger citizens feel that their place is overheard, the more they trust local relative to national institutions. (7/9)
18.12.2023 09:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This dynamic is largely confined to individuals who live in rural places and contexts where local autonomy is higher. (6/9)
18.12.2023 09:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Relying on original, nationally representative survey data from nine European countries, I document that individuals who feel that their place is cheated in one or another way significantly trust local over national institutions. (5/9)
