Glad you got the salary sorted at least.

Well, not me specifically, I just said πŸ˜…

But yes, in theory, DUO will register doctoral degrees obtained abroad. When they're not being massive [explitive deleted], anyway.

Blasphemous! Criminals!

(I tried to do it in the Netherlands for... reasons. Gave up trying after a few years)

Oooh, I have heard about credit scores in the US; always seems like a weirdly dystopian concept. Like: "even if you can pay for this car outright, it's better to buy it on credit to improve your credit score" what??

Payment from an international bank is also a problem, for the record, since most banks don't allow you to make international bank transfers in Norwegian krowns. Even my Swedish bank is difficult in this regard, but allows it under certain circumstances.

The tricky bit is that by Norwegian law, any deposit must be placed in a Norwegian bank account held by the tenant.

As @sirxa.bsky.social points out, it is technically allowed to rent out a property without asking for a deposit, but that voids your home insurance, so is very rarely done.

Oof, I feel your pain; it took me over a month to find someone in Germany willing to rent to me without a German renting history.

Hope you found someone kind to help you out!

Oooh yes. All of it. Luckily I can somewhat understand the language here, but even then, everything is so different, you just feel lost all the time.

And if that is what it's like for me, I cannot imagine how much worse it must be for people from further abroad.

Oh, I don't doubt it. Like I mentioned somewhere in the thread, not trying to diss Norway: I have had a similar experience in every EU country I moved to.

At least at the time I moved, Sweden still let you open a bank account without an ID number, but they stopped that, too.

Oh, and for anyone wondering: Norway has strong tenant protections. One of the rules is that the tenant must open a new special bank account where the deposit is kept. There are strict rules governing who can access that deposit, so you're much less likely to lose it to an unscrupulous landlord.

Not dissing Norway here, by the way. Same thing happened when I moved to Sweden, or Germany.

Tried to register in Germany as married. "We need your marriage certificate". Well, Sweden does not issue marriage certificates, but here's my official records? "UNACCEPTABLE YOU ARE NOT MARRIED NEIN NEIN"

Mind you, this is immigration on Doom-guy-in-baby-hat easy mode. I'm already an EU citizen, and I have lived in Sweden for years.

Anyone who thinks immigrants just walk across the border and get given everything they want is pants-on-head levels delusional.

Luckily, I found someone willing to rent their apartment to me without a Norwegian bank account, but *technically*, it is illegal for them to do so.

There is effectively no way for anyone to move to Norway without slightly breaking the law.

10.10.2025 12:06 β€” πŸ‘ 16    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Moving to Norway be like:

- Can't sign a rental agreement until I have a Norwegian bank account.
- Can't get a bank account without a Norwegian ID number.
- Can't get a Norwegian ID number without having a rental contract.

It is absolutely hilarious to me how some people think immigration is easy.

The secret is that they're all called pikachu. There's the stuck-in-the-ground pikachu, the coffee-cloud pikachu, the pidgeon pikachu, cat pikachu, yellow-rat pikachu, and so on.

Except for the snake. That one's called uhcakip, for some reason.

Seconded. And in similar vein, I genuinely enjoyed Valerian and the city of a thousand planets.

It's visually stunning, and the plot isn't terrible. Not great, but not terrible.

I once handled a manuscript that came back from three very thorough reviewers, with only a minor revision.

Though I suspect that manuscript had been rejected post-review elsewhere, first. It was extremely polished.

One theory I've heard is that batteries use chemical reactions, which are temperature-dependent. As those batteries are getting near the threshold, it's the colder ambient air at night that pushes them over the edge.

That, or global conspiracy, of course.
