imo Ys 8 makes one of the strongest arguments I've ever seen that designing a "you can go everywhere you can see" game using separated zones instead of open world "go anywhere" can actually be significantly more compelling and unified-feeling. this game really has absolutely top tier sightlines

Have some conflicting thoughts on how a few plot/character threads were resolved and I think the marine sections very much overstayed their welcome but this was otherwise a major return to form after finding the previous book comparatively underwhelming

referring to metroidvanias as "hollowslop" to simultaneously piss off people who like metroidvanias, people who like hollow knight, people who want a better genre name for "metroidvania", people who are sick of the word slop being misused, and gradius fans who want to see more checkpoint recoveries

Fairly enjoyable popcorn read, felt like a superhero origin story superimposed onto a fantasy setting which was pretty novel but definitely way too short to really get super attached to the world or characters. Wanted a palette cleanser in between malazan books so it served its purpose

The Bonehunters 3.5/5

Hurts to give this a comparatively low rating when it has maybe the best singular chapter in the entire series (so far) but it was otherwise easily the most bloated and meandering book for me, a major contrast with how tight the last two were.

Why does the difficulty go down when you die??? Makes it basically impossible for the player to gauge what difficulty they *should* be playing it at, the challenge becomes so inconsistent and random unless you just commit to doing each stage from the beginning whenever you die! It's terrible!!

When I go to hell it's just gonna be the same as my actual life right now except every single video game ever is gonna have the challenge meter from kid icarus uprising attached to it. Easily the worst approach to video game difficulty I've ever seen, so glad it didn't catch on

This Video Game Has Residents of My Missouri Prison Obsessed It seems that everyone here is tending farms in Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town.

In Missouri prisons, people can purchase some Nintendo Game Boy Advance titles on their Securus tablets. Last year, Byron wrote about how Harvest Moon took over his facility: "About a week after the game was made available, it was the only thing you heard many prisoners here talking about."

May I humbly recommend gardens of the moon by steven erikson :))))

Bonehunters has had some dull parts as well but it's already had what is in my opinion the single best event in the entire series (one 150 page chapter that could've honestly been its own self contained novella) and that's doing a ton of heavy lifting for it

DG and especially MoI have some incredible moments but they're the ones I have some bigger issues with

I have no fucking idea what I'm gonna do with myself when I finish Malazan man I can't even read anything else anymore, everytime I try it always pales in comparison and I get bored and come back

Midnight Tides 4/5

Explores the most interesting themes in the series and easily had the highest amount of banger passages I screenshotted but it's held back by some inconsistent story choices and lighthearted/comedic sections which didn't land for me at all. Fucking UNBELIEVABLE climax though

I genuinely think this particular aesthetic trend (Good Art Is Didactic And Also Assumes You Are Very Stupid) is a non-trivial source of anti-woke backlash, like unironically. It is really really annoying, and I think it has provided wedges by which anti-wokes can radicalise nerds.

House of Chains 5/5

Easily the best one yet imo, by far the tightest narrative of all the books so far, introduces some of my favorite characters and took some I was previously lukewarm on and turned them into favorites too. Shocked this seems to be widely considered one of the weakest ones
