The Invisible Kingdom by @meghanor.bsky.social gives words to the complex experience of living with chronic illness. As a newer citizen of the kingdom of the sick, I found O'Rourke's story to be deeply emotional and her research illuminating. I will definitely be recalling and revisiting this text!

If you see a stranger with a severe medical condition online, please do not to tell them what to do. If you have help to offer--NOT ADVICE, I mean access to treatment & a way to afford it-- offer that right up front. Do not lead with "Do this." We're *exhausted* & getting orders from all sides.

The best actors in the world are those of us with a #chronicillness.
We're stuck in an ableist world where showing your true self as a #chronicallyill person is neither expected nor desired.
When someone asks "how are you?" anything other than good is met with awkwardness, boredom, or annoyance.

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce.
Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.
