Can protests move bystanders, people who observe protests without being part of the march?

We conducted a 3-wave field experiment during real Fridays for Future (FFF) protests in Berlin.

Sharing evidence on immigration with parliamentary candidates, we find that politicians from extreme parties - especially those on the far right - select evidence that aligns with their party's priorities

4️⃣ Takeaway

As far-right parties gain electoral strength and focus on evidence that supports their positions, policymaking may become more one-sided, increasing the risk of ill-informed decisions.

3️⃣ What about citizens?

In a parallel survey (N = 1,428), FPÖ supporters also preferred the “fewer migrants” evidence.

Left-leaning voters leaned toward the “poverty” evidence, but less strongly.

2️⃣ Main result: politicians

We tracked which link they clicked.

Candidates from ideologically extreme parties were most likely to select evidence aligned with their party’s position.

This pattern was especially clear among far-right candidates (FPÖ).

1️⃣ The setup

Ahead of Austria’s 2024 election, we invited candidates to engage with two credible but conflicting pieces of evidence on the same migration policy reform reducing welfare benefits.

➤ One showed more poverty among migrants
➤ One showed fewer migrants arriving
