Happening now: protesters in Chicago are interrupting a hiring fair at the Congress Hotel, where U.S. Customs and Border protection is recruiting today.

Banner reads, "stop kidnapping our neighbors!"

It's quite the scene in here, and the DHS table has been blocked for several minutes already.

37 years since the #8888Uprising - we will never forget and the revolutionary spirit lives on, even though the Burmese military junta persists in its dictatorship to this day.

A big-eyed black, grey, and white bee on a fleabane flower. It's just fuzzy enough to be conventionally cute, I think.

Cuckoo bees are super cute. I love their big ol' eyes and their spiky butts. Coelioxys (sayi, maybe?) As much as I love bees, I also love their brood parasites (some of which are also bees).

Alright I have a question for *all of you*, esp for those of you who are not into environment stuff.

When you think about planting native plants in the area you control, what *prevents* you from taking that action? These could be emotional, financial, practical, anything.

RTs appreciated here.

I think after some time (providing iNat really takes care in its next steps) people will come back. Many people seem really torn about leaving in the first place.

Also, everyone I know irl who uses iNat, had no idea any of this was happening. The bleeding may not be as bad as it feels?

In a comic strip panel, person in a red shirt walks through a sunlit forest. The text says "Sometimes I go looking for a tiny part of the universe."

"This part only takes up as much space as: half an apple, a salt shaker, or 2 ping pong balls." Each of these items is shown.

Galaxies and stars swirl as the text says "But somehow, in an unfathomably huge universe," and then there's a complex mess of forest leaves, with one tiny Wilson's warbler in one corner, and the text says "this one tiny part"

There's a close up of the warbler, blazing yellow against a sparkly yellow background, and the text says "can fill up my whole heart."

I'm worried that people are so burnt out on bad faith interactions with organizations/companies that in the rare instance of a good faith mistake (which I do think this is), they just don't believe it.

Too much work went into iNat to let this fuck-up ruin it.

I think it was made with good intentions. There's more to reversing this kind of decision than 24hrs or weeks can deliver. I hope they don't make it worse before they have a chance to make it better.

It's a tenuous hope.

Even if iNat seems dispensable to you due to your abundance of local resources, it's the only thing people like me have.

They're now taking feedback from the community so this is our chance to steer them in a better direction.

I don't want the platform to die, I want it to do better.

Please don't do this. I can't see you recovering from this if you dont back out of it soon. Your best contributors are gonna walk out. Delete their data. Your whole platform will be functionally useless.

I expect the other horrible things I wake up to. This was a surprise. A heartbreaking one.
