Legitimate question for scientists:
What’s a reasonable window for a desk reject?
I’ve had hours to weeks…
I just had one that took 21 days at a journal with a pretty high IF. I think that’s way too long, but wanted to get others’ impression.

Hierarchical organization of mechano-nociceptive pathways revealed by activity labeling Noxious mechanical stimuli give rise to distinct percepts, from sharp cutaneous pain to diffuse visceral discomfort, yet the nociceptor ensembles that underlie these differences remain poorly defined....

Not all pain is created equal: stepping on a nail feels different from a stomachache. We know there are many nociceptor types, but a key question remains: how is mechanical pain encoded across the body by those sensory neurons? Our new work helps answer this. 1/8

The hero who disarmed one of the terrorists in Sydney turned out to be 43-year-old Ahmed al-Ahmed — a fruit shop owner and father of two.

He was shot twice and is currently in hospital. He is scheduled to undergo surgery.

He had no experience with weapons of any kind.

Canada is finally getting high speed rail (maybe?)

But the route cuts out Kingston and leaves out London & Windsor. These could easily become engines of industry & exchange. What a missed opportunity!

There's no reason to let them off the hook. One opinion piece for the sake of 'balance' does not undo the harm caused by the editorial board.

The issue is that academic institutions globally have become investment engines and basically corporations, rather than beacons of education and moral compasses that we pretend they are.

Ultimately, run a university like a company, and it will do what's best for shareholders, not society.

Our first endeavour in understanding how endogenous cannabinoids (eCBs) contribute to pain sensitivity. in @painthejournal.bsky.social.
We found that baseline, fasted eCB ligands are not associated with point estimates of pain sensitivity, except for pressure pain.

Canada ducks a recession, barely, thanks to Keynesianism.
In particular military Keynesianism.

Households spending less
Businesses spending unchanged (overall, big changes under the hood)
Governments spending more, especially on "weapon systems"

Imports down a lot, exports barely up.

Deliberate de-civilization has forced Gaza back to the Stone Age Before the genocide, Gaza was a vibrant, happening place full of life. Now, we are back to an age without basic modern developments

“We have reached the end of life in Gaza, with nothing but rubble, & Israel refuses to allow in equipment & building materials or even to dig wells for Gaza residents.” Nour Abo Aisha details how Gazans are being punished in the most rudimentary settings despite the war having officially “ended.”

I don’t know how this sort of misogyny has been normalized again. I have some ideas, though.

Canada seeks star academics from abroad, but stable funding for higher education remains a concern | CBC News Proponents believe a current push to recruit star researchers from abroad will mean top-tier learning for Canadian students and a boost to research innovation and excellence. Yet concerns remain about...

"Are we going to support talent here in Canada and the development of our students and our researchers who are here?'" Whitaker asked…simply injecting a wave of high-profile academics at the top without supporting the foundation beneath them is "going to leave us short-changed." @caut.bsky.social

The first study, by Georgia Hadjis, shows that motivational conflict, rather than resource competition, determines priority assignment when pain is concurrent to competing demands.
