Nice feedback! In the past, this same young man was subjected to all manner of 'physical management'. Often such methods were used as a shortcut to simply to get him through transitions but our approach means such methods are simply not in our toolbox so we have to find a gentler path.

β€œIt ruined my ability to say no, taught me that I didn’t have bodily autonomy and primed me for abuse later in life. I can only imagine how much worse other people might have it. 😦 ”

*Yes, they often refer to it as PBS not ABA, but they still hire ABA teams to do ABA techniques on autistic children. It's ABA.

"Be good and I'll make it worth your while." No matter how well supervised their use may be in education or adult care, such systems are a path to unfairness and open the door to abusive practices. Thank you @alfiekohn.bsky.social for all your work around this subject.

Cultures of caregiving steeped in the simplistic A-B-C model of human behaviour are often to blame. There are always lots of staff in these places so the problem is not money.

CCTV shows pupils abused and locked in padded room Police have said staff will not face action over abuse of autistic children shown in videos leaked to the BBC.

This isn't acceptable any more, as a system, is it.
