Additionally, some of NOAA's very high resolution convective-resolving models (designed specifically for this purpose) were the ones that best predicted this incipient disaster. Yet these very same models are on the chopping block this year with the proposed NOAA budget.

Predicting such storms is at the cutting edge of science right now, and the stakes are rising in a warming world in which they are intensifying. Yet this is precisely the kind of research that NOAA/NSF have funded in the U.S. over decades that is at imminent risk of disappearing.

Nothing but problems with my daughter's 18 Elantra. Paint peeling, engine starting problems (ECM replaced), catalytic converter issues, and the stupid ignition switch security problem. I guess we should be happy that the engine hasn't let go. It never ends.

Due to staffing issues, the Tucson NWS is no longer sending up a 12Z sounding. This sounding is a meteorologist's most important short-term monsoon forecasting tools. This data is also critical for the accurate weather modeling of monsoon thunderstorms.

I personally know 3 people on the chopping block. Two have over 30 years of experience and had just changed positions. One left NOAA for NCAR and he said his NOAA replacement was let go since it was a recent promoted to fill the vacant position. He had over 30 years as well. Insanity.

The now-confirmed and rumored additional cuts to come at NOAA/NWS are spectacularly short-sighted, and ultimately will deal a major self-inflicted wound to the public safety of Americans and the resiliency of the American economy to weather and climate-related disasters.
