AI is snake oil. As I heard recently "it gets things wrong all the time but says it incredibly confidently" and it couldn't be more accurate - and it's built on the stolen labour of so many talented and skilled people.

It's a tiny sample size but it was interesting this year at #Dragonmeet that our more "indie titles" like our one page RPGs and @susanahgrace.bsky.social's CHVLR did miles better than our 5e title The Spy Game. I think more people are finally ready to move away from #dnd

just on DTRPG, in 2024, there were roughly 2,608"core books" for RPGs released ytd. I'm sure there are lots of mislabeled titles.

That's 7.8 a day, including the bad data. There are nearly 8 products released a day on DTRPG marked as "Core Rulebooks".

I think like many things they've originated from the community itself and then used by marketers to piece their games amongst the hobby. These labels can be a powerful shorthand for both publishers and players.
