She/her, Australian, AuDHDer. Too much politics, not enough video games. Profile pic is an installation by Greer Lankton.

INTERVIEW OF

BY LCDR
11 Q. So how did you get yourself started into submersible
12 operations?
13
A.
Well, I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic.
When I
14
set down the path to make that film, the first thing that I did
15
was arrange to be introduced to the head of the submersible
16
program at the P.P. Shirshov Institute in Moscow, a guy named
17|
Professor
I. I did that through a mutual friend
18
of ours, a guy named
, who is one of the preeminent
underwater cinematographers in the world. And had been on a
20
submersible expedition out to Titanic the previous year with the
21
Russians. And that was organized by a Canadian company that was
22 doing an IMAX film which was released under the title Titanica.

Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

I wrote to Tony Burke about the closure of Meanjin, and finally received a reply from the office of Jason Clare, who had been forwarded the message because it was an issue for higher education, rather than the arts (!).

This is a wholly embarrassing and inadequate buck pass and response.

A tumblr post that reads "WHo would have believed that the perfect wikipedia photo caption could have been improved upon?" Two identical images are then side by side. The first caption is "Piper Kerr, a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904". The Caption for the image on the left reads, "Piper Kerr (right), a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904"

"even MTG is condemning the Gaza genocide!" false. absurd. the words of a maniac. she has simply determined that at present, her wholly unchanged Christofascist white supremacist goals are served more effectively by opposing Israel. in your heart you know she loses no sleep over dead Muslim children

Everyone once in a while I remember Poncher exists and I get so fucking mad lol.

I know we got infinitely more substantive stuff to achieve first but the final step on the road to feminist utopia will be disinterring that creep and hurling his remains into the sea.

This one leaves a particularly foul taste in my mouth because Monroe’s exploitation DIDN’T end w death.

Richard Poncher demanded to be buried face-down in the crypt above her. Hugh Hefner, who exploited her images in life, dropped
75K to β€œspend eternity” next to her.

Let this woman REST!

In the video Smith posted online, he said Neuralink engineers had started using language models including ChatGPT and Grok to serve up a selection of relevant replies to questions, as well as options for things he could say in conversations going on around him. One example that he outlined: β€œMy friend asked me for ideas for his girlfriend who loves horses. I chose the option that told him in my voice to get her a bouquet of carrots. What a creative and funny idea.”

These aren’t really his thoughts, but they will doβ€”since brain-clicking once in a menu of choices is much faster than typing out a complete answer, which can take minutes.

Ok, Final ep of my sprint to rewatch all of Buffy!

I really think Chosen knocks it out of the park in most ways. It answers the central big problem of the show, which is that it’s entirely unfair to demand one girl give up her life and fight until she’s dead.

It's in the liminal state that you're most psychologically vulnerable to anything that promises a return to structure, an escape from the dark corridors back into the bustle of crowds and normality.

05.04.2024 18:29 β€” πŸ‘ 51    πŸ” 5    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And interestingly, there *are* monsters in the liminal state, the dark places between other places.

It's in this liminal state that you're most vulnerable to a monster persuading you.

05.04.2024 18:29 β€” πŸ‘ 52    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

What happens then, is you somehow bump into another person also wandering the quiet corridors, and form a community

This is called "normative communitas," a camaraderie that exists among people who find themselves in the same liminal space they thought they were alone in.

05.04.2024 18:27 β€” πŸ‘ 64    πŸ” 8    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

An interesting concept in anthropology is liminality.

Liminality is just the temporal version of finding yourself in a liminal place. When you're right on the cusp of a life milestone, not quite before or after it.

I came of age during the early years of the war on terror, so I’ve become fairly resigned to Australian foreign policy being oriented entirely towards pleasing the US.

But I’m flabbergasted that there’s been no course correction this year. Like not even a little rhetorical distancing. Incredible.

The image shows Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Donald Trump shaking hands while facing each other. RFK Jr., on the left, has gray hair and is wearing a blue pinstripe suit with a white shirt and dark tie. Donald Trump, on the right, has blond hair and is dressed in a dark blue suit with a white shirt and red tie. They are standing against a backdrop of fireworks, which fill the background with bright, scattered bursts of light.
