15.02.2026 13:08 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0People really do have a really hard time accepting that if a person answers a question with intelligent reasoning, then a LLM that correctly produces the same answers must have a capacity for intelligent reasoning at least as good as that which they required.

"They don't have the capacity to do reasoning with intelligence, they just respond in exactly the same way as something with intelligent reasoning would, by pretending to reason what their intelligence would produce" really is a spectacularly daft way of looking at AI.

When the whole thing unravelled they did finally admit they'd been wrong, but it was in the Eye via a columnist. I don't think I've heard Hislop address it himself personally. TBH I see their latest crusade to make a saint of a baby serial killer as coming from the same conspiratorial mindset.

She's going to be put to sleep otherwise -- due to a heart issue that won't affect her for another 12 months

I don't blame you for not knowing, he's been completely teflon about it. There's a direct line from that to COVID vaccine conspiracy, and yet no-one has gone "hang on a second!" even as he talks about that.

13.02.2026 17:22 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0If you get your decent headphones on at home it sounds magically magnificent, not least because you can't hear a drunken people in the pub wailing to it. But their tendancy to do that doesn't distract from the genius of it, and it is genius.
13.02.2026 17:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0And that's before you consider that almost everyone involved in the development of AI agrees that there's a very real chance it will, and this isn't hyperbole, kill us all.

I can well believe that, but I don't think anything I've ever coded at scale by hand from scratch couldn't now be done better by it. And boy did I waste some time making stupid mistakes along the way...
12.02.2026 15:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I agree with all of what Matt's said here. Construction isn't just guys in hard hats. In health nurses and paramedics are a lot safer than doctors and consultants.
12.02.2026 15:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Chap, we could argue back and forth on this, but neither will persuade the other. Let's revisit in one year. But what you've just said is "it won't be that disruptive, it'll only eliminate swathes of white collar middle class jobs". Even if I accept that premise, sheesh.
12.02.2026 15:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0A year ago I was saying "I'm not sure I'd advise someone to get a law/software degree". Now I honestly have no clue what I'd advise a young person to do. Become a plumber? We've reached the point where AI can improve AI, and no-one is applying breaks. The only solid advice I have is "buckle up".
12.02.2026 14:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I've been very concerned about AI safety for many years, it's profoundly worrying. At each step I've been told not to worry, and then each step becomes a leap and expectations are normalised. In full peace, let's revisit this in exactly one year.
