People really do have a really hard time accepting that if a person answers a question with intelligent reasoning, then a LLM that correctly produces the same answers must have a capacity for intelligent reasoning at least as good as that which they required.

When the whole thing unravelled they did finally admit they'd been wrong, but it was in the Eye via a columnist. I don't think I've heard Hislop address it himself personally. TBH I see their latest crusade to make a saint of a baby serial killer as coming from the same conspiratorial mindset.

I agree with all of what Matt's said here. Construction isn't just guys in hard hats. In health nurses and paramedics are a lot safer than doctors and consultants.

Chap, we could argue back and forth on this, but neither will persuade the other. Let's revisit in one year. But what you've just said is "it won't be that disruptive, it'll only eliminate swathes of white collar middle class jobs". Even if I accept that premise, sheesh.

A year ago I was saying "I'm not sure I'd advise someone to get a law/software degree". Now I honestly have no clue what I'd advise a young person to do. Become a plumber? We've reached the point where AI can improve AI, and no-one is applying breaks. The only solid advice I have is "buckle up".

I've been very concerned about AI safety for many years, it's profoundly worrying. At each step I've been told not to worry, and then each step becomes a leap and expectations are normalised. In full peace, let's revisit this in exactly one year.

I haven't used the latest Claude, but the latest Codex release is so good it's sci-fi. I was just looking at what people were saying about Claude on the other place, and this was first up. Sometimes the sky really does fall.
