Anyway, that's a few. Harder to think of characters in adult books that I hold in my heart - perhaps I read too many books in which people behave badly towards each other.

Lord John Grey in the Outlander universe (books, not TV) of whom I am most fond because he's the straight man that has all the funniest lines, he has the most real quandaries, he is unfailingly loyal in the most trying of circumstances, and is incredibly competent.

Thomas McNulty and John Cole in Days Without End because of their loyalty to each other and quiet determination to live their truth. They are precious to me.

Danny and his dad in Danny, Champion of the World, because although our lives are nothing alike, the humour and the joy in the relationship between them feels like home.

Anne Shirley and Jo March because they are a lot like me but said out loud the inappropriate things I kept in my head. I wanted to be that fierce.

Lee Scoresby and Hester in His Dark Materials - their fierce and irascible love is very familiar to me, and every interaction between them rang a familiar bell, so they stayed in my mind.

Having pondered some of the characters I think of fondly, I suppose it is usually because they are in some way relatable even if the context is far from my own experience. Sometimes it's because I admire them. Sometimes because I find them delightful and would like to share a drink with them.

I can cope with English language dirty talk in a non-English accent. Even other British accents are ok, but in an English accent, whether West Country, London or Geordie, I can't do it. Cringe.
Also, even British English doesn't have a handy equivalent for "making out".

What if they say something wrong?! What then?! Despair, that's what.
