I had a character say the R-word in a short story I had published about 12 years ago, and the first time I read it aloud in front of an audience I realized it was a mistake. I cringe now when I think about it but it’s in a print magazine so it’s out in the world like that forever. But I regret it.

So yeah, you can put the R-word in a character’s mouth, but is that the BEST way to tell the story? Really really there are no better options?

Because the “realistic” version is ugly and horrifying, and in almost all cases that level of ugly doesn’t serve your story, it detracts from it.

So yeah as a writer you have a responsibility to be true to your characters. But you also have a responsibility to your audience. In 99% of movies when someone gets shot they don’t show the real damage a bullet does just because it would be more “accurate”.

That word when spoken aloud has a weird power that kinda overwhelms everything around it, and it would have been a flaw, a distracting blot that would have ruined an otherwise stunningly beautiful piece of dialogue.

seeing that word was a big record scratch. Turns out it’s in the book, and arguably it’s in-character for a West Texas sheriff in 1980. But the effect in the book and the effect in the movie were just different.

In the screenplay for No Country For Old Men, in Ed Tom’s opening monologue, he casually drops the N-word. It didn’t make it into the movie. Reading that beautiful meditation about the nature of evil and moral courage and hearing it in my head in Tommy Lee Jones’ voice…
