For the 4th we were selling cookies in front of a pot store during a parade. Lots of fire trucks, ambulances, tractors - not very many flags at all. One with the VFW contingent, one on a heavy wrecker. These people were there to see their friends, not rah rah America. Def. a mood.

True - but I think the sentiment pervades the culture to this day in some very difficult ways. It's a fascinating subject- resentment is complex!

I think if you looked at a lot of early 19th century writing directed at American women in particular you'll find directions to address those feelings as being from the devil and needing to but put aside in favor of a cheerful sense of duty.

I appreciate you being willing to consider the idea from that angle.

That's an incredibly impossible standard for any caregiver, especially when you lose everything- career, youth, health - in service of keeping someone else alive. And I am not sure it's very healthy to suppress emotions that way.
