Those positions were: -Religious freedom -Separation of church and state, and -Negotiating with indigenous people for their land, instead of seizing it through combat or decree After a brutal winter trying to find a permanent home, Williams negotiated with Narragansett Indians for the land that became Providence Plantations. Repeatedly, Williams kept his word to the Narragansett. Twice, he volunteered to be the tribe’s hostage enabling tribal members to negotiate the release of their leaders. In 1647, Williams convinced settlers to agree on becoming The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The colony’s charter proclaimed freedom of conscience making it a safe place to live for Baptists, Quakers, Jews, and others who were persecuted for their beliefs in other colonies. Williams’ positions influenced the United States’ founding fathers, who included some of his ideas in the Constitution.

On this day in 1635, members of the General Court in Boston, banished Roger Williams from Massachusetts Bay Colony by citing what they called his “erroneous and dangerous positions.”

Some good news. I feel like it's very easy to let the volume (both in terms of loudness and amount) convince us that a greater number of people than is accurate are anti-queer and anti-immigrant, so it can be sobering and helpful to get numbers like these.

Greene may be best known for his 1940 book The Power and the Glory, about a desperate priest wandering through rural Mexico when the church was outlawed. Another well-known work, The Quiet American, was published in 1955 and foresaw the U.S. Vietnam War. Greene was recognized with the esteemed Shakespeare Prize in 1968.

Since my next book release is horror, I plan on having an appendix with trigger warnings for each chapter. Science shows that trigger warnings are ineffective, but I still want to offer them. I am conflicted but certain about this.

Hell yes. Somewhere along society's recent existence we stopped understanding that someone's win isn't our loss and a disagreement isn't a personal attack. I absolutely love this story about it:
