He Burned a Flag and Won an American Right. He Worries It’s at Risk.
The Texas appellate court said, “Recognizing that the right to differ is the centerpiece of our First Amendment freedoms, a government cannot mandate by fiat a feeling of unity in its citizens.” Since then, many have tried to mandate patriotism. I’m skeptical a court would rule this way today.

Stanford Newspaper Challenges Legal Basis for Student Deportations
It’s no surprise that targeting noncitizens for using freedom of speech and the press has a chilling effect on others who would exercise their First Amendment rights. Glad to see the Stanford Daily student newspaper taking the lead with support from @thefireorg.bsky.social

This problem is massive. Local journalism is essential to civic engagement. The loss of local journalists is a factor in the erosion of democracy.

I learned this week that you can put our troops' lives in danger, compromise our national security, and violate the Espionage Act. And the government will do nothing.
But if you write an editorial for your school newspaper that Trump doesn't like, you will be abducted on the street and disappeared.

The Sun-Times is losing some amazing journalists. They wouldn't want us to stop.
The bad news: 35 staffers — including 23 in the newsroom — took a Chicago Public Media buyout and most are leaving today. But their sacrifice will help ensure the newspaper's future.
Maybe because I’m at a journalism conference this week, but news that the @chicago.suntimes.com is losing so much talent and experience at a time when we need both just hits hard. I’m happy to be a subscriber and thankful that this newsroom will still be fiercely reporting on a dynamic city.

We must learn from the past. We cannot remain silent in the face of authoritarian attacks on our peers, even if they have not yet come for us.
“Remaining silent will not protect us — but it does come with at least two major costs. … If America’s nearly 6,000 universities and colleges launch a campaign in defense of higher education, odds are that Trump will lose.”
