Recently finished King’s THE SHINING. Such an exceptional read. Now, I’m thinking back to my undergrad years, when an entire department refused to advise my writing of a thesis related to King’s work. There’s a literary quality here—a clear brilliance. #teacherman #teaching #writing #write

With every cell of my being and with every fiber of my memory, I oppose the death penalty in all forms. I do not believe any civilized society should be at the service of death. I don’t think it’s human to become an agent of the angel of death.

Since leaving the Twitter-verse, I haven’t found a comparable community of educators. I don’t regret leaving—yet I miss the discussions and professional learning. Calling out to my fellow educators. Definitely miss you and look forward to learning here. #teaching #EnglishTeacher #teacherman

The Muscular Compassion of “Paper Girl” In her new book, Beth Macy returns to her home town of Urbana, Ohio, using it as a ground zero for understanding right-wing radicalization.

Ever since Donald Trump was first elected President, in 2016, a slew of books have attempted to reckon with the growing divide between urban and rural populations in the U.S. Few do so as deftly as Beth Macy’s new book, “Paper Girl,” Grace Byron writes.

The 'Threat to Democracy' Is Over It's time to admit that the fascism we feared is already here.

“An authentically popular American fascism would be pious, antiblack, and, since September 11, 2001, anti-Islamic as well.”

“One rationale for public schools has long been that students benefit from learning alongside classmates from different backgrounds,” writes Diane Ravitch. “But this is precisely what the parents’ rights movement rejects.”

Roth’s work is masterful—yes, requiring interrogation, but his narratives and characters are exquisitely crafted, his ideas incisive and critical. After reading several of his novels, I listened to the biography by Blake Bailey. I continue to be intrigued, and want to read more of Roth’s novels.
