You're not alone. I think we're the silent majority. It's just that - as you say - the others are louder, and probably more online.

YES. My favourite place in Glasgow at the moment! Their salad is possibly my favourite salad ever

We have launched a series highlighting the positive stories of refugees and asylum seekers in Scotland πŸ’™

Our team tells you why we felt this was necessary to do πŸ‘‡

Anyway, just my thoughts as very much a layperson. I find all this stuff so interesting and love thinking/hearing about it πŸ™‚

Like, the standards for that trope being used have raised, more work is needed to make them work - and simultaneously, maybe more people are using them *without* much thought/work being put in. 5/

25.08.2025 13:56 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

they now have to kind of hide the trope, or say/do something very new with it, or acknowledge/refute the general mood in the room at the topic being brought up (e.g. β€œeveryone has ADHD”), where a few years ago they wouldn’t have had to. 4/

Like, I find it fascinating that there are jokes that were genuinely funny 20+ years ago that aren’t funny now because everyone’s heard them before. I wonder if something similar is happening with the β€œsad bit”, and with certain common topics – so in order for them to work, 3/

25.08.2025 13:56 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

then suddenly a bit of a barrier goes up between comedian and audience and it becomes harder for them to be funny. 2/

I find this super interesting as well! I wonder if part of it is that stand-up kind of has to be either fresh and new, or self-aware in its use of cliches/tropes, in order to be funny – if everyone in the room is thinking β€œAh yes, this trope” and the comedian doesn’t acknowledge that, 1/

Hmm, not in spam for me either. And I've been keeping an eye out, because I did think it might be today. Ah well. It's always a long shot, and this is still probably fairer than the old system

Wait, what? I didn't get an email! Did they only go out to a random selection of people from the mailing list, or?

If any of you know anyone looking for a really cool stand-up act with 5-15 minutes of material for the fringe you should recommend me ngl.
(I know it’s not that easy but you never know who may stumble across this post).

and I don't really remember it afterwards. An anxiety response, I suppose.

This wasn’t me (I’ve never done standup) but I’d be interested to hear an answer to this and am quite surprised that it's not something any of you have ever faced? I enjoy public speaking and I’m not bad at it, but I feel like I'm not having any conscious thoughts when it's happening, (1/2)

I was thinking of posting that thought last week, and now feel particularly vindicated by the puppy-murder and Fatiha's total, beautiful failure to kick down a door

Many reasons to love s19 of #Taskmaster, but one of my favourite things was Mat looking all smiley and gangly and CBBC and then every so often coming out with sudden dark creepy humour - and otoh, Fatiha being gloriously grumpy and then occasionally such a genuine wholesomeness shining through

Yep, I went through that phase at age 6-7ish, after we learnt about it at school. I remember for a while having a bag of things I'd dug up in the garden 😁

Have you ever met a Walt?

The other week a mouse came home with me in my bag. What's the biggest animal you think you could have in your bag for a five-minute journey without noticing?

The only thing that gives me slight hope is that there’s a few years before the next election. There must be enough decent people in Labour to turn things around – get rid of Starmer, or maybe break off and form a new party? They’d have to be clever about it, but it’s not impossible.

13.05.2025 11:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yep. I’ve never voted Labour (because I’ve always had the option to vote SNP, or Green in a safe non-Tory seat), but at least I always hoped they would win in Westminster. I always knew a lot of them were right-wing, but I never imagined it would be this bad

13.05.2025 11:31 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

School careers advice basically amounted to β€œchoose your favourite subject and the best university you can get into”. At undergrad I knew a LOT of people who felt they were pushed into doing a degree they didn’t really want to be doing and wouldn’t do if they had their time again.

08.05.2025 12:30 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

As someone who didn't know many people who paid for undergrad, I'd say it's not just that - there’s also the fact that these days (or at least 10 years ago when I was leaving school), everyone who gets good enough grades is expected to go to uni unless they’ve got a specific alternative in mind

Trying to guess the context. Definition of the boundary of a topological space? Or is it part of something more complicated?

It feels like it's time for them to announce the next series of Taskmaster, doesn't it?

I was staying nearby recently, walked past and caught a glimpse of roof and garden a few times. You can't really see it but, surprisingly, it did feel kind of exciting even so :)
