Totally agree. It was like a wave that came, often with a new MD! And, absolutely, the urge to please shareholders has contributed a huge amount.

At the risk of sounding old and cynical, publishers absolutely know this and have for decades. It was a mantra at the first publisher I worked for back in 2001 - and even then it was difficult to stick to. The temptation to spread your bets is too great...

Absolutely!! Three completed novels is a lot more than a lot of people who think about writing achieve - crack out the bubbles!

100% this. Comparison is the thief of joy, esp when it comes to writing/publishing journeys. Much better to really celebrate EVERY win you have as a writer, whether that be winning a competition, getting an agent etc. Quite honestly, completing an actual novel deserves a bottle of champagne, IMO...
