Publisher’s ad to last page of a book, within border of typographical decoration. Last item: “Apuntamientos de otorgrafia[sic.], por D. Juan de Palafox”.
“Apuntamientos de otorgrafia”. Typo in the Spanish word for correct spelling (ortografia) in this early C18 publisher’s ad.

Front cover of the pamphlet, with Chinese and English titles (Phonetic picture dictionary = 看圖識字) and related information, "The National phonetic symbols and word-forms interpreted by mimetic and illustrative cuts arranged according to rhyme endings," "Phonetic Committee Number 22."
Page 1 of the pamphlet. Includes various words with "p" sound and illustrations.
Preface to the text, in Chinese and English.
A little treat to myself for my 35th birthday. An illustrated 1920 pamplet on 'Bopomofo,' the Chinese transliteration system instituted by RoC and still in use in Taiwan. search.worldcat.org/title/26031012

The Guia of 1599 is the Jesuits' earliest (extant) print to involve such a combination (and there are not too many in general). But at least they already had almost a decade of experience printing texts either in Japanese or in Roman script by that time. In any case, the result looks quite lovely. 🤓

Of course I do. ^^ (In this case, the use of hiragana -- not katakana as in the other cases we talked about a while ago -- results in an even more interesting appearance though. Maybe I'm simply more used to rotated katakana, but I find such rotated hiragana considerably more challenging to read.)

A manuscript in which two instances of the word "head" have been replaced by small faces
He keeps doing it. Every time somebody gets beheaded in this text, the word "head" is replaced with a little hand-drawn emoticon. And considering how many people get beheaded in this story, that's a lot of lil face drawings.

Beiträge zur Heimathkunde des Kantons Bern deutschen Theils
Nice find! According to hls-dhs-dss.ch/de/articles/... Samuel Leemann (1651-1709) studied in various places during the years 1672-75, and books.google.de/books?id=YfE... states that he studied in Leiden. But Golius had already died in 1667, so maybe there's some further intermediary?

Yes, indeed, would be interesting to know which sounds exactly they had in mind -- here's a link to the scan: books.google.de/books?id=ECy... (doesn't seem to contain any such details though).

It's sort of interesting that Kanazawa only speaks of differences *in pronunciation* -- be they due to differences in climate (I), occupation (II), or diet (III). His (only) concern appears to be that even an originally uniform Esperanto would naturally develop regional varieties *in pronunciation*.

I just noticed that the year 1905 given in the original tweet should have read 1908 -- sorry for that!
The text is from the journal "Rōmaji", vol. 4, no. 3 (25 Dec 1908), p. 5 (cf. here babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=co...; this may require a VPN connection depending on where you're based).
