It clearly requires trust in the GM as you say.

I don't think it requires planned story, but it could help there. It gives the GM a tool to push characters harder if they look like they might roll through a fight. Take more turns until they are battered then let off the fear token gas pedal so the PCs feel like they "just pulled it off".

I get the problem they are trying to solve: The PCs lock in some combo or get lucky and a high-level adversary fails against a save-or-suck roll and after the 6 PCs act the awesome boss monster is at 10% health and hasn't even acted yet. Makes boss fights unsatisfying.

I did look into it and rules-as-written the GM is only allowed to activate/spotlight a single creature on a fail / success wFear. Every activation of an adversary after that requires a fear spend or they must return the tempo to the PCs.

But I doubt we will find major concentrations of any new pharmaceutically active compounds in grand wormwood or gentian or the other flavorants & bitterants commonly used in these drinks because they have been studied.

Absolutely you are correct that wisdom and knowledge in the sense of cultural practice and meaning of plants is lost in the way you describe. Certainly some medical compounds could be lost, hiding in an understudied weed because the herbals or traditions that used that plant didn't come down to us.

I doubt there is much lost medical wisdom there however. Ethnobotany is a field that has been seriously studying plants used by world cultures since the 1940s.

Chartreuse is a member of a class of herbal Alpine liqueurs called "génépy" which were also believed to be medicine. Those could also be fun to taste.

When a culture figures out distilling they shortly discover how to make tinctures to extract alcohol soluble compounds from plants.

This seems to simplify the argument too much for me. Anti-theism is a philosophical position whereas christian nationalism is a political one. I don't begrudge an anti-theist trying to convince someone of their position any more than I begrudge an evangelical theist the chance to preach and convert.

Alluded to, but not yet discussed directly is the emotional impact randomizers have on players. A good example is how Dread uses the anxiety of pulling from the Jenga tower to mirror the fear and anxiety of the characters in the players. But even reaching for the d20 makes a player fear and hope.
