My expectations for WotC as a company are incredibly low, especially under Hasbro, but I’m sure that as a UB set would surprise even me at how fucking awful it would be.

Trying to make sets a limited environment, tell a decent story, and have strong cards for constructed is ultimately foolish and I’m surprised when it actually works.

Not every gap in design needs to be filled. It’s okay for some colors to be lacking in areas.

Spider-Man as a 2HG format that kinda focused on Heroes vs Villains would be sick as fuck. “Conspiracies” as Bugle Headlines would be rad.

As cards just added to the greater Magic pool. Meh.

Something positive, mostly so I don’t get myself worked up over nothing (this one’s just for me):

Universes Beyond are fine. In a perfect world, they’d be the summer supplementary set or something, like Battlebond or Conspiracy back in the day. My deepest sympathy for Standard players.

Collector’s Boosters are a fucking plague and always have been.

Ward is such an asinine keyword.

MDFCs make me actively hate cards that transform/meld.

Printing on the backs of cards was novel, but it needs to fucking stop.

Fuck it, I’ve got more in me, each like gets a hot take.

Landfall should have stayed in Zendikar like all the other plane specific, interesting mechanics we never get to see again.

Cards where you have to weigh the cost of their benefit to the actual (non-mana) cost of playing, need to come back.

It takes a lot of the juice out of the game when the big drawback is “oh, this just costs to much compared to the 3 legends that do similar but better”

Hot Magic take: retiring Shroud in favor of Hexproof was a net negative in game design. Second only to legendary creature glut.

There are a lot of choices that got made that not only shifted the pendulum, but made it stick. It’s unlikely to swing back the other way.

Because taking a beating to curve power down is not good for shareholders. That and Standard isn’t the marquee format anymore.

I genuinely miss niche things like this. How some cards had horrifying drawbacks/costs, that became boons when the right enablers came out.

Now, it’s almost all upside. All power ramp, not even creeping.
