I read the thread. You were brought up in a highly rare environment, for a GenXer. A lot of doors were open to you that weren't to most of our generation. It's hard to tell younger people how much opportunity was scrapped right in front of us, bc they think we still had choices like the Boomers did.

Ok. All I'm doing is elucidating the "sell out" allegation. When a band epitomizes a certain subcultural identity, it has to reckon with that subculture's possessive nature towards it; for good or ill. Stepping away from that identity, for whatever reason, is a fraught move.

Fair enough. A useful thought experiment, tho': what if "Load" was a debut album by a previously unknown band? Would it have had enough juice to make that band popular enough to make more records?
