Well, I don't like being tethered to one place to play a game. My PS4? Mostly played via Remote Play on my Vita. My Series X? Yeah, I don't think I've turned it on in months (yes, the Series X has remote play from the console, it sucks)

It also didn't like being charged with my Ally dock charger (I think the fact that the dock has HDMI output made the Portal think I was trying to output video) but I've got plenty of USB C charging bricks, so that's not really an issue

It's surprisingly heavy, too, given the comparative smallness of the battery to the Ally. It feels fine in the hand, to be clear - the grips are real good, but if you're going in expecting Switch Lite weight, nah. It's closer to the Switch 2.

The Portal hardware itself is... pretty good? Having what's essentially a DS5 a foot or so away from your face makes it clear how damn loud the trigger actuators and haptics are; there's constant mechanical clicking noises that are way more noticeable than the fan on my Ally

That said, if enough people go this route - I can see there being bandwidth issues and waits for games to start. And Sony could pull the plug at literally any moment, and unlike Stadia, there's no chance for refunds on games purchased (Sony, probably: "Well, buy a PS5 to play the games you bought!")

But PS Cloud streaming, so far, has been excellent. There's the occasional artifacting and color banding (can't avoid that with streaming), and there's noticeable input lag in 30FPS games (again, can't really avoid that), but beyond that, Astro Bot looks and plays fantastically

As someone that dislikes gaming hardware prices, install times, and prefers handheld gaming, I've always kept an eye on cloud options. xCloud and GeForce Now never quite hit right; in best case scenarios, I saw image breakup and connection issues (I have 500Mbps fiber, it ain't me, babe) on both

Don't buy a PlayStation Portal just so you can finally play Astro Bot. It's $200 for the Portal (or ~$100-$150 for a used one), $60 for the game, and then another $20/mo to stream said game to the Portal.

...all that said, if you *do* do that, you'll find the best cloud gaming experience to date.

Rooting not just for a Game 7 of the World Series, but another 18 inning game that goes so long on Saturday night that the clocks fall back at 2am before it’s ended and everyone gets tremendously confused about what time it is.

I’m enjoying the games and the drama, but I honestly believe if I was a real fan of either of these teams I’d be dead from a coronary.
