The HRA was required to open an investigation because they’d received a report... which gave the Newsnight duo the shocking headline they desired.

We have examined the review process for the research study into pubertal suppression for adolescents with gender identity disorder, which was approved by a REC in 2011. The committee followed the normal process of reviewing the study documentation, including the participant information and consent process. However, the information that Newsnight has brought to our attention has not been raised with us before. The HRA publicly clarified that the study BBC journalists Deb Cohen and Hannah Barnes had criticised, had ethical approval.

Their page shows the BBC enquiry and the HRA response. No breach found, no withdrawn approval, no scandal. The BBC reporting misled people.
