The Ur-text is Lowe's Immigrant Acts, where she has a really good reading of abstract labor and how it elides bodies, and racialized bodies in particular, but I actually prefer Ikyo Day's reading of Lowe in relation to David Roediger, in Alien Capital. I think it's just in the intro?

I will be in conversation w/Brandon Terry about The Future That Was at Harvard Book Store, March 30 @7PM

In the book, I narrate how women aspired for a better world. I also account for the annihilation of internationalism, rights, and research now, 50 years after the 1st International Womenโ€™s Year.

Here's a couple weeks of the syllabus for an Atlantic Revolutions course I took with the great Carolyn Fick in 2012. The class was a mixture of advanced undergrads and grad students at Concordia University. I don't think they'd let you assign this much reading now....

It's so funny--but also annoying--when people make sweeping generalizations about the academic job market by talking about the Ivies, when so many of the actual jobs are at public schools who have hiring rubrics overseen by and dependent upon conservative state legislatures.

Imagine doing a whole PhD and still thinking Great Man history is real and you're living it. Structural forces can't touch you! You are not acted upon by the world like lesser "DEI" scholars--you are the hero of the story!

And then you run into actual history. That's gotta hurt.

Texas Universities Use AI to Rewrite How Courses Mention Race and Gender Experts say the use of AI could continue to shift control over education away from faculty and toward administrators.

At Texas State, administrators are suggesting faculty use an AI writing assistant to revise course descriptions. They urged professors to drop words such as โ€œdismantlingโ€ and โ€œdecolonizingโ€ and to rename courses like โ€œCombating Racism in Healthcareโ€ to โ€œRace and Public Health in America.โ€

When I teach the War on Terror I emphasize how โ€œWMDโ€ always was a strange and unstable concept, encompassing both battlefield chemical weapons and nuclear weapons developed explicitly to cause maximum civilian harm. It never made any sense as a category and now it has fully jumped the shark

It's a structural problem caused by standardized testing, large classes, and a refusal to pay educators. I can't speak for secondary education, but I can say that at a college level, it's amazing how enthusiastic even your colleagues can be about gaslighting you that many of these are just fine.

Amazon Is the World's Biggest Online Book Marketplace. It's Filled With AI Knockoffs Authors say Amazon's knockoff book problem is leaving them frustrated โ€” and making the internet worse in the process.

Amazon is making money off AI copies of books - and putting the onus on authors to prove theyโ€™ve been plagiarised.

Honestly, just stop buying books from Amazon. Get them from an actual bookshop or order them from a reputable book supplier like bookshop.org
