Just got back from running a few errands here in Hammonds Plains. Seen that’s it’s been snowing since ~1/2pm so I figured I’d take a snow measurement. Looking like at my place I got ~3cm of snowfall thus far. Here are also what the roads look like too. #NSstorm #NSwx #Halisky

I’ve noticed that even within the respects of the GEPS the GDPS seems to be closer to an outlier. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds… especially since it will be a Groundhog Day storm, but maybe it’ll help keep the groundhog inside so we get spring sooner.

At my place in Hammonds plains as of 7am this morning my storm totals were:
- 30.5cm of snowfall (31.0mm of water)
- Approx. 0.5mm of Freezing precipitation
- average snowdrifts of 52cm.

At my place in Hammonds plains (120m or 390ft in elevation) as of 730am I have had no snow and just ice pellets / Freezing Rain with currently trace accumulation but 1.6mm within the gauge. #nswx #NSstorm #Halisky

As of 20:55AST (0055z) at my place in Hammonds Plains, I have a total of 7.7mm of freezing rain inside my rain gauge. Also did additional ice accretion measurements, average accretion at this time is 4.9mm of ice.

It is still Freezing rain mixed with Snow also.

If temperature is below 0°C and rain falling as liquid then that’s freezing rain. Freezing rain occurs when supercooled water falls as a liquid then freezes on contact with a surface (like roads, trees, etc.)

As of 17:00 AST (1900z) at my place in Hammonds Plains, I have 5.6mm of freezing rain inside my rain gauge. Also did some ice accretion measurements, average accretion is 3.75mm of ice.

Yes it’s honestly crazy some of the damage up here. I would estimate the winds to be around 110-120km/h. The only other time I’ve seen trees snap like this was in thunderstorm events.

This is a 9-inch tree that got pushed over tearing up approximately 16inches worth of roots from the ground too (took a photo but it’s too blurry sorry). Now this is a shallow rooted tree but still impactful. #nswx

I’m out here in Hammonds Plain. This is a 4inch diameter tree that snapped at the base from last nights wind storm. Also another tree near it had multiple layers of bark blown right off of it. #nswx #halisky

Heres some highlights from the recent storm that came through the Maritimes. Highest wind gust was 135km/h from Grand Manan, with a strong second place of 127 from Monastery.

These strong winds also gave in excess of 185,000 households without power across the 3 provinces. #nswx #nbwx

A neighbour of mine just sent me photos of another tree that fell tonight in Hammonds Plains. Shared with me at 12:25am AST (04:25 UTC). Be careful if you are out there folks.

At ~605pm AST I seen a transformer blow up while driving to work. Called NS power and they said they would try to get someone out to fix it but couldn’t give an exact time frame. #nswx #nsstorm

Getting reports from neighbours that there are several trees downed with some near the road on Hammonds Plains road between Yankeetown Road and the intersection at Pockwock Road.

Comparing the GEFS and ECMWF Ensembles gives some insight into some of the challenges with this system coming up. This is the probability of wind gusts exceeding 64KT (~120km/h).

Rodney, just out of curiosity. But do you guys share information available through CoCoRaHS in the weather summary ? Or is it strictly manned + auto stations ?

Which is ironic because the weather accounts are probably the most active out of any government accounts…

Just came in from snowblowing and did a snow measurement.

Total snowfall in Hammonds Plains from this morning until 21:40 AST is 9.25cm. Looking at the MRMS scan of the radar estimates and using a standard 10:1 conversion we get ~11.9cm #nswx #NSstorm #halisky

I was browsing CoCoRaHS this morning, and this just goes to show how localized snow squalls can be and how quickly they can dump snow. In Turo there was a maximum of 32cm. #nswx #NSstorm #snowsqualls
